Sayyam leaned from side to side as he furiously tapped on his phone screen, completely engrossed in the game at hand, when Yuvani came barging into his room. She tapped on his shoulder hurriedly, trying to get his attention.

“Hmm?” Sayyam responded, his gaze not leaving the screen. Yuvani huffed, snatching the phone away from him.

“Hey!” He retorted, trying to take his phone back, “I was on the last level…I was this close to winning!” He held up his thumb and forefinger to represent how close he’d come to almost winning the game, pouting dejectedly.

“Forget the game, I need your help,” Yuvani rolled her eyes.

“With what?” Sayyam shook his head in annoyance.

“We forgot to check if Yuvaan’s ring fits him, and today evening is the engagement!”

“So?” Sayyam cocked an eyebrow, clearly not understanding the problem.

“Yuvaan’s not at home…”

“And? I still don’t see how this involves me at all.”

“Mumma said yours and Yuvaan’s ring size is probably the same…”

Sayyam looked up at Yuvani in confusion, still unable to assess the situation.

“You idiot, Mumma told me to tell you to try on the ring to see if it fits!”

“Oh.” Sayyam pursed his lips, “okay, where is it?”

“Right here,” Yuvani bit her lip, handing him a plain silver band. Sayyam gently took it from her and tried to slide it on his ring finger, but it wasn’t going on smoothly.

“Am I going to have to teach you how to put on a ring bro?” Yuvani mocked, smirking in amusement.

“Why don’t you try, miss perfect,” Sayyam stuck out his tongue at her.

“Here,” Yuvani grabbed his hand and tried to push the ring on, but it wasn’t working.

“Did it work?” Sayyam asked, his eyes shining in jest.

“Shut. Up.” Yuvani frowned disapprovingly, slightly self-conscious. At that moment, Krishna poked her head inside the room.

“Anything wrong Yuvani? I could hear your voice from down the hallway.”

“Hey, Krishna! Just the person I was waiting for! Can you help Sayyam put on this ring?”

Sayyam started to shake his head, refusing to take help from Krishna, when he was interrupted.

“Of course I will!” Krishna smiled sweetly, stepping closer to him, a glint in her eyes. She took hold of his hand and roughly shoved the ring onto his finger, grinning with satisfaction when he grimaced in pain.

“Does it fit?” Krishna bent down to his level, obviously taking pride in the pain she had caused him.

“Yes. It does,” Sayyam hissed through clenched teeth.

“Great!” Yuvani exclaimed, oblivious to what had just happened. She pulled the ring off Sayyam’s finger, causing him to wince once more. Grabbing Krishna’s hand, she rushed out of the room with the ring, leaving Sayyam to slowly realize that she had taken his phone as well.

“There goes my game,” he sighed, leaning back in his seat.

Krishna looked around anxiously, her nerves getting the better of her, as she stood in front of Yuvaan, a ring in her hand. She glanced around her and saw that Suhani aunty and her Dadu were beaming proudly. She spotted Yuvani grinning at her and smiled back, noticing that Sayyam was standing at the end, his arms folded. ‘Leave it to Mr. Khadoos to look dull at a happy occasion,’ she pouted, turning back to Yuvaan.

He looked down at Krishna expectedly, slowly extending his hand out. Krishna blushed slightly, and gently slid the ring onto his finger. Her cheeks turning a deep crimson when everyone around her started clapping.

Krishna shyly held her hand up as Yuvaan began to place a ring on her finger. She saw him frown and looked at her hand, realizing that he was having trouble getting the ring on her finger.

“Should I help?” A voice rang out from the group. Krishna and Yuvaan glanced towards the voice, watching as Sayyam stepped towards them. Krishna blanched when she saw Yuvaan’s brow furrow in irritation.

“It’s ok, I’ll do it,” Yuvaan replied curtly, trying to force the silver band to fit her, his face turning red.

“No, it’s no problem,” Sayyam walked up to Krishna and roughly pushed the ring onto her left hand ring-finger. A small tingle passed between them and Krishna cringed in discomfort, while Sayyam merely smirked smugly.

“It fit, right?” He looked into her eyes, clearly meaning payback.

“Yes.” She scowled, while Yuvaan just crossed his arms exasperatedly.

“Good,” Sayyam smiled warmly, turning to Yuvaan to shake his hand, “Congratulations on yours and Krishna’s engagement.” He backed away slowly, heading back into the crowd, ignoring the tight feeling in his chest after saying those words. As Sayyam walked back to his place, he was stopped by Yuvani for a moment.

“Bro, what was that?”

“What was what? I just helped her put the ring on.” He shrugged nonchalantly.

“Fine, whatever,” Yuvani tilted her head to the side, trying to analyze her step-brother as he strode away.
