a twist in the tale; swabhiman (chapter 4)

today was the day the two newly married couples had to leave for their honeymoon to greece. meghna was already down with kunal checking if they had everything ready. karan was there as well, eating his breakfast and waiting for naina to come out so they could leave. naina and karan didn’t speak since the incident in which karan accused naina of marrying him for his money, she was still upset with him and didn’t plan on speaking to him the whole trip either. naina finally came out and they were ready to leave.

as they were taking everyone’s blessings before they left, sandhya decided to make a comment.

sandhya: now the both of you are looking like chauhan’s bahu’s and not some girls from boondi.

dadaji: sandhyaji, clothes don’t define anything. instead, ones upbringing does.

nirmala: please take care and call me once you land okay?

khyati: and bhai, don’t forget to get me gifts from greece!

kunal: we’ll call you once we land ma and don’t worry sis, we won’t forget your gifts.

the four of them then left and reached the airport. they checked-in, walked around a little and then had to board the flight. because they woke up earlier today, they managed to sleep all throughout the flight. once they landed, they went straight to their house.

meghna: wow, this is beautiful kunal.

kunal: frankly, i didn’t think it’d be so great because we’ve never really been here before but, it really is something.

the housekeeper then showed up and naina started talking to her in greek, not realising she’d have to explain this to kunal and probably karan as well, later.

housekeeper: (english) hello. i’m athena, if you need anything, you ask me.

kunal: what are the good places we can go tonight?

housekeeper: (english) um, i’m sorry. i no understand.

naina: (greek) i’m naina. athena, is there anywhere we could go tonight? maybe see the sunset or something. what do people usually do in the evenings here?

housekeeper: (greek) oh you speak greek! i don’t speak much english, ma’am.

naina: (greek) please, call me naina.

housekeeper: (greek) yes, naina. actually, there’s a place just fifteen minutes from here where a lot of people go to see the sunset. you can walk it there but you should probably leave in an hour if not you might miss it.

naina: (greek) oh okay, that sounds good then. thank you so much.

kunal: naina, i didn’t know you spoke greek?

meghna: naina used to always buy these books and learn new languages. she even knows spanish and french.

karan: wow naina, that’s amazing.

naina ignored karan and spoke to kunal and meghna instead.

naina: athena said that there’s this restaurant fifteen minutes from here where people like to go to see the sunset. but we have to leave in an hour if not we won’t make it. i don’t think there’s much we can do now anyways so should we meet down in an hour and walk it up there?

they all agreed to meet down in an hour. karan and naina got changed in separate room whereas in meghna and kunal’s room, something else was happening altogether.

kunal: meghna, hurry up! we have to be down in ten minutes.

meghna: i’m ready. how do i look?

meghna’s outfit: Like This

kunal: (sighs) amazing. you look absolutely amazing. god, how did i get so lucky?

meghna: haha, thank you. you look quite good yourself too.

kunal: really?

meghna: yes, kunal.

kunal: well, not as good as you, beautiful.

meghna: kunal, let’s go if not we’ll be late. naina and karan must be waiting for us.

kunal: ugh fine.

karan was already downstairs waiting for them. when meghna and kunal went down, they saw him sitting in the sofa.

meghna: karan, where’s naina?

karan: um, bhabhi,

naina: i’m here, i’m ready. sorry, were you guys waiting for awhile?

naina’s outfit: Like This

karan looked at naina and was absolutely speechless. she looked beautiful.

karan: wow.

meghna: no, we just came down.

naina: oh okay.

kunal: you know, naina, i think that’s the first time karan’s been speechless.

naian: we should probably leave, we’re going to miss the sunset.

karan realised naina was still ignoring him and now it was becoming obvious to meghna and kunal. on the way to the restaurant, meghna and kunal were busy with each other whereas naina and karan didn’t even walk together. no one would ever think those two were on their honeymoon. after awhile they reached the restaurant.

kunal: should we sit there? we’ll be able to see the sunset better.

naina: yeah, you’re right jeeju. no one will block the view there either.

a waiter came and gave them some menu’s to order.

meghna: i’ll have a french fries.

karan: water.

kunal: have something else karan.

karan: i’ll just have water.

kunal: okay, i’ll have a chicken pesto sandwich.

naina: one beer, please. thank you.

as the waiter walked away, all of them looked towards naina a little confused.

meghna: naina, beer?

naina: yes di, beer. i’m on vacation, i deserve a drink.

kunal: naina, have you had beer before? you’re not going to like the taste of it and besides, with one bottle you’ll be drunk. we’re going to have to carry you home, you do realise that right?

naina: don’t worry, jeeju. i’ll be fine.

before kunal could say something again, karan spoke up.

karan: bhai, why don’t you let naina do what she wants. she’s an adult, she can handle herself. if she wants to drink, let her.

kunal: i know she’s an adult, karan. i’m just worried, we get drunk with two bottles. naina doesn’t drink, could you imagine how drunk she’d get with one?

meghna: kunal, naina gets drunk after six bottles, not one.

kunal was shocked. he was about to ask naina if that was true but then the sun started to set so instead the four of them just sat there in silence. in awe of the beautiful sunset. not saying a word to each other, not caring about the problems they had. they just sat and watched the sunset.
