THAT FALLING KITE – PART 5

She felt she had no strength left, she didn’t want to see the slides further but she had to for she had to be strong to face the reality.

The next one showed a little girl with half lip then the next showed a baby with a flat face, another one with a visibly impulse behavior then came a series of kids who were unable to walk properly who were unable to sleep properly and as an image of the baby with a bulging tongue came she turned down the lid of the laptop.

“hey, you okay Mrs. Singh ?” the doctor and her husband shaken at this sudden action.

“I am okay….she said taking deep breaths. She knew something was amiss, she knew it wasn’t a normal pregnancy and this checkup far away from a normal routine checkup.

He felt he has no words, he was understanding why doctor showed them the slides, it had to mean something and now he was waiting for someone to say anything cause he had no strength left and he felt surprised when the lady beside him spoke.

“So you want to say, our baby is going to be abnormal for the lifetime.” She was no terrified rather calm.” But I know we will be able to help my baby…right?” she said in a strong voice.

“People say medical science has progressed so much we will surely be able to help my baby…right doctor?” for the first time in her life she felt herself fortunate that she was with a man who will take their baby anywhere for the cure or for any help the baby needed.

But aren’t we human beings a little too hasty in making pre assumptions.

Despite saying anything doctor called someone to get two glasses of water.

“ Oye Rangeele….i know you do this on purpose, you don’t want to work that’s why you keep getting sick so no one tells you to work.” He said to the sleeping form of the sick boy.

“But mind my words ….when I will become a big man, I will make you my personal manager. Then you won’t be doing these works only taking care of my little sister and keeping an eye on my money.” He again tried to wake up his friend.

But no response came. Only the water like liquid from the bottle kept going into his palm through the drip, nothing else happened.

He felt like crying because Ragi was the only person apart from his sister who he truly loved, truly wanted to live long. But it felt it was again the toughest thing he was asking the gods to listen.

“Hey, Cheeku…came the smile filled voice of the young doctor who worked for them.

‘Doctor didi…he ran to her.

“What happened to him?” He didn’t wait for any moment and started as soon as she reached her.

“He should not have been weeding himself with those stuffs, it is costing him.” Taking the slow strides away from the patients she said to the restless boy.

“But he will be fine in a few days….he asked the question which was in his mind from the moment he saw his friend there.

“Pray to your god…. They say god always listen the kind kids.” She said ruffling his hairs as they came out from the ward filled with many such patients.

If gods listen then why a ten days born girl was abandoned near the dustbin? If gods listen why the Crackers factory had to blast and a young couple had to go missing? And if gods listen why there was a partiality between them and riches……

“But he will pray to him because someone said there was reason behind everything and it will come to light only when the right time comes.” Wiping the tears he decided and took the lane which was taking him to his work place because he had to work and pay for the loss he had made.

After sipping the cool water and rubbing the now restless baby inside her womb she looked to her side and it seemed the man of his mind and the man who loved to conquer every situation was so helpless in this moment.

“Mr. Singh, we need to talk.” And the silent atmosphere was again broken by the doctor.

“Huh…yes, so what we need to do doctor.” He seemed disturbed and his words jumped out of his mouth without him knowing.

“Relax both of you…please don’t worry.” It wasn’t a situation for such calm words when all three knew about the dread.

“See…what I have showed you are the abnormalities with which the baby will come and will live his or her life, I meant to say it will be a differently abled child but…. Doctor stopped.

“but.” they waited for the doctor to continue.

“But …there could be a case where the baby won’t be able to complete the nine months of pregnancy or a stillbirth or if it manages the delivery it will only make its first birthday the maximum.” Doctor said and waited for a moment.

“So what you want to say is there are possibilities the baby may live the full life with certain disabilities or will die after a couple of months.” She asked with no show of any nervousness if she was going through one.

The strength of his wife again amazed him, he was unable to believe it was the same lady who was so nervous to meet the doctor today and who was crying every now and then in the past three days.

“usually we will do the serum tests first to get to know which kind of chromosomal aberration the baby is with; the Down’s or the fatal ones, then only we can decide what to do or….WHAT YOU WANT TO DO.” Doctor emphasized the last words and confused them more.

And at this moment his brain came to life again and he asked, “What you want to say doctor- why we will be the one to decide, aren’t you the one to say what is to be done.”

“Actually Mr. Singh if it turns out trisomy 21 that is down’s syndrome then you have no choices than to prepare yourself for the differently abled baby but if it turns out to be trisomy 18 that is the fatal one, it depends on you whether you want to continue with the pregnancy or abort it…….cause anyway the baby will only be able to live a life less than one year or so.” Doctor completed and looked at them for if they needed to know anything else.

But when no one made a move then the lady understood the couple needed a little time to themselves.

“I need to go on a round of my ward, I will be back in few minutes…is it okay to you?” she offered adjusting her apron.

“Thank you doctor.” He said grateful for the space she was giving them to think properly and to come in terms with all that was said.

“Anika…you okay.” he asked as soon as the glass door was closed leaving them alone.

And tears filled eyes met his blue ones, “have we lost it Shivaay ?” she said to him.

he reached for her hands and turning his chair to her’s stared her without a word  because he had no answers …all the things he had control felt so little now cause he was unable to change the destiny of his unborn baby.

“Don’t worry we will be fine Anika…he said coming to her and hugging her standing near her chair.

Though she rested her head on his torso she didn’t hug him back, “what should I pray to god Shivaay…should I ask for a baby with a long life or should I ask for a healthy baby cause in both cases I will lose it.” And He hugged her tight for she was right. They were left to a dilemma they were unable to solve.

The long life came with a Not Normal Baby and the healthy baby came with a choice; whether they wanted to abort him or keep for the couple of month’s life he was coming with.

The workshop was in a hustle today for they have got a few new assignments to complete and the owner wanted to make it on time.

Cheeku too was helping Somesh in the glassblowing today despite Somesh saying he was little for it.

When suddenly one glass sheet broke and crashed the another one near the furnace, it caused the glass-vases being shaped on fire to crack inside the fire and in no time the work place was filled with cries, shouts and pain stricken terrified voices.

Hey guys next part is updated and again a long author note.

So 21st march is a day dedicated to Down’s syndrome and if you don’t know what this disease is please take the help of Google.

Though my updates turned irregular but I wanted to complete it in a month time for the gravity of this story is when you read it one go (as I feel). But nevertheless I have made it my priority that I will complete it as soon as I can.

Now if you feel this was the worst chapter then hold on… You will hate me for the next chapter and for the things I will leave you with; I have just disclosed the complicated situation of the pregnancy there is more to come and certainly other characters we need to be attentive of.

This is the story I write with immense concentration and I love writing it because we don’t talk about these things generally or even think that this too can happen. Maybe if we will talk more we would be more helpful to the differently abled people or the mindset will change towards those kids and persons.

And finally we are towards our destination to see how fairy tales turn nightmares, actually they have already started.

Lastly Thank you so much guys for the support you have been, this gives me the boost to write more. Will be waiting for your response.

With love Morusya.
