CHAPTER 29
Swara and Sanskaar walked back home.
Swara : Sanskaar! You have to go to your room and rest. You may be better but you’re still weak.
Sanskaar grimaced.
Sanskaar : But…
Swara : No buts. Jao. Go rest. Once you get up later, You’ll feel better.
Sanskaar muttered something about her nagging him even though they weren’t married. Swara shot a glare at him and he offered a sheepish smile.
Swara : Off to bed, Sanskaar.
Sanskaar pulled her close.
Swara : Sanskaar! What are you doing? Go to bed na…
Sanskaar : Shhh! Kitni baatein karti ho. Now listen, I’ll go to bed if you do too.
Swara looked at him stunned.
Swara : What? Are you crazy? It’s 10:30 in the morning. Who talks about things like this so early. Now chup chaap go to sleep. Go to bed, it seems.
Sanskaar (indignantly) : Arre! I suggested you go to sleep because your eyes are red and you spent the whole of last night awake taking care of me. But you, Swara! Chee… Who thinks like this?
Swara (spluttering) : I… I didn’t… I don’t… SANSKAAR, GO AND TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF. GO SLEEP.
Sanskaar (with a wicked glint in his eye) : You sure you won’t join me?
Swara pulled his ear.
Swara : Sanskaar!

Sanskaar : Accha! I’m going now. Promise me you’ll take rest for a while too?
Swara smiled and nodded.
Swara : I promise. I love you.
Sanskaar (smiling) : Tell it again?
Swara put her arms around him and said it again.
Sanskaar : Again?
Swara : If I tell it once more, Will you go and sleep?
Sanskaar groaned but nodded.
Swara : I love you, Sanskaar.
She kissed him on the cheek and walked up the stairs to her room. Sanskaar took the stairs on the other side and went to his room but not before shouting out loudly that he loved her.
Swara was smiling as she entered her room. She smiled as she changed into her favourite nightgown. She smiled as she washed her tear-streaked face. She smiled as she got into bed.
Swara : Oh Lord! I have thanked and told everything to Laksh, But I need to tell thanks to you too. Thank you for helping me understand the truth. Thank you for making me happy. Thank you so much for Sanskaar.
She went to sleep, a satisfied smile on her lips.
When Swara woke later, She was shocked to find it was nearly 6 in the evening. It was dark though and was pouring once again.
Swara frowned as she got dressed hurriedly.
Swara : Sanskaar is alright na? Why didn’t anyone wake me? Did he have his medicines? Swara, Go fast. Check on him.
She ran to his room but the door was locked.
Swara : Sanskaar? Sanskaar? SANSKAAR? Where are you?
She looked around worried, calling for Sallu. But no one responded. She felt her heart clench. Where was Sanskaar?

Swara (screaming) : SANSKAAR!
She could feel her panic willing her to hysteria. She forced herself to calm down and went about searching. Finally, She thought of the salon. The first place where Sanskaar had brought about the topic of marriage, the place where he had told her he loved her, the place where she had said those hurtful words to him.
She knew then, without any doubt, that Sanskaar was there. Suddenly, her feet were running as fast as she could. She came panting and stood in the doorway, finally finding Sanskaar.
He was wearing his favourite white t-shirt with a black blazer and he had his headphones on.
Swara let out a breath she didn’t know she was holding. She walked towards him and placed her hand on his shoulder. He turned sideways and looked at her in surprise.
Sanskaar ( removing his headphones) : Swara?
She hugged him tight as he stared at her confused. His arms came around her and he held her until he felt her tears on her shirt.
Sanskaar (worried) : Swara? Why are you crying? What happened?
Swara (wiping her tears) : I went searching for you everywhere but I didn’t find you. I was scared. What if something had happened to you and I had been sleeping at that time?
Sanskaar : But why will something happen to me, Sweetheart? I am well, Swara. See, Look at me.
He cupped his hands around her cheeks and kissed her forehead. She smiled slightly embarrased, but her tears didn’t stop.
Swara : Old scars never really go away, I suppose. I got another chance at happiness, Sanskaar. I’m just apprehensive something might happen to it while I’m not looking.
Sanskaar : I will not promise that nothing will ever happen to me. But, Swara, That doesn’t mean that something will definitely happen. You know that.
Swara (nodding) : I do. Yet….
Sanskaar hugged her.

Sanskaar : I’ll be here for you, Sweetheart. Swara, I love you so much. Please don’t cry. I cannot bear it.
Swara wiped the last of her tears and smiled.
Swara : I’m sorry. I’m sorry for being such a cry baby. I don’t mean to. I…
Sanskaar effectively shut her up by placing his lips on hers. Her eyes widened astonished, but then she smiled and gave herself into the kiss. Finally they emerged for breath, and Swara laughed.
Swara : That certainly worked.
Sanskaar : What did?
Swara : Your attempt to shut me up.
Sanskaar laughed as well and winked at her.
Sanskaar : I’m the Charming Casanova after all.
Swara (glaring at him) : Oye, Mr Sanskaar Maheshwari! You are no more the Charming Casanova, you understand? You’re mine. You understand?
Sanskaar : Lucidly.
Swara relaxed and looked around the room.
Swara (confused) : What are you doing here anyways?
Sanskaar started and covered Swara’s eyes.
Swara : Sanskaar? What are you doing?
Sanskaar : Close your eyes.
Swara : You’re covering them.
Sanskaar rolled his eyes at her obvious sort of tone. She opened her eyes as he removed his hands.
Sanskaar : Keep them closed. (whispering at her ear) I mean it. There will be severe repercussions if you don’t.
Swara chuckled, clutched his shirt and pulled Sanskaar closer.
Swara : I wouldn’t mind the repercussions, Mr Maheshwari. Especially if they’re by you.
She winked at him and he chuckled.
Sanskaar : My wicked girl. Accha! Now keep your eyes closed. Please?
Swara smiled and nodded. Sanskaar made her sit down on the sofa and asked her to wait for some time.
Swara (keeping her eyes closed) : Sanskaar! Can I open them now?
Sanskaar : Two minutes. Then you can.
Swara (amused) : This had better be a good surprise. I am awaiting for a huge surprise, Baby.
Sanskaar : I think you’ll be happy, My dear. Now open your eyes.
Swara opened her eyes but saw nothing different in the room. She looked wonderingly at Sanskaar standing in front of her.
Swara : There’s no surprise?
Sanskaar laughed and came forward and helped Swara up. He turned her around gently and made her face the other side.
Sanskaar (softly) : There’s your surprise, My love.
Swara couldn’t speak. She looked at the scene in front of her. Sanskaar had switched off the lights and added the soft glow of candles. Bouquets of lilies and roses added to the romantic ambience. But the feature that struck Swara the most was the words on the wall.
WILL YOU MARRY ME?

Swara walked forward and saw that the letters were formed by pictures of her. Sanskaar had painstakingly cut pictures of her and formed the letters. Tears welled up in her eyes again. Sanskaar walked in front of her, wiped the tear that ran down her cheek and shook his head. Swara nodded and wiped her tears.
Sanskaar got down on one knee and held out a box.
Sanskaar : I had many ideas on how to do this. Though I suggested that we get married that day, I always wanted to give you a proposal that you would remember. I thought I’ll propose to you on the day I tell you I love you, but….
Swara : Life turned out differently.
Sanskaar : Life turned out perfectly, Swara. And even though, I couldn’t think of anything original to tell and had to resort to taking George Lyellton’s poem, I still mean these words.
He took a deep breath and began reciting.
Sanskaar : When Swara on the plain appears, awed by a thousand tender fears; I would approach, but dare not move : Tell me, My heart, Is this love?
Swara’s smile grew wide as Sanskaar continued.
Sanskaar : Whenever she speaks, My ravish’d ear, No other voice than hers can hear No other wit but hers approve: Tell me, My heart, If this be love?
Swara sucked in her breath and thought that the sound of her heart thumping would mute his words.
Sanskaar : When she is absent, I no more, Delight in all that pleased before; The clearest spring, or shadiest grove: Tell me my heart, if this be love?
Sanskaar opened the box and took out the ring. It was made of platinum and had a single diamond flanked by two sapphires on either ends.
Sanskaar : I have never loved someone as much as I loved you, Swara. I don’t know how our lives will be from now on, but as long as we have each other, I know I’ll never regret it. I want to be with you, I want to learn from you, I want to make you laugh and wipe away your tears. I want to give you your children. I want you, Swara. Will you marry me?
Swara nodded, her tears running freely now. Sanskaar beamed and put the ring on her finger. She knelt as well and hugged him, almost knocking the breath out of him.
Swara : YES! I’ll marry you. I love you and I want to be with you too. I want to be the mother of your children. I want to be the reason for your smile. I want you too, Sanskaar.
Sanskaar kissed her. Then he kissed her some more like he could never leave her.
Finally, They drew apart for breath and sat side by side, Sanskaar’s arm around her and her head on his shoulder.
Sanskaar : Do you want a small wedding, Swara? I know you already went through it once. I’m amenable to anything.
Swara smiled.

Swara : I don’t really care, Sanskaar. I don’t care how the wedding is conducted. I only want you. But…
Sanskaar (gently) : But?
Swara (looking at him) : Chachi must have had wishes for you. She longs to bring a daughter in law to the house. She has dreams that needs fulfilling. I cannot spoil her son’s big moment just because I’ve gone through it already. I want Chachi to be happy.
Sanskaar (kissing her forehead) : Then, I think it’s time we go back to Kolkata and tell everyone. I have to talk to Badi Ma first. I need to take her permission before doing anything.
Swara nodded.
Swara : Let’s go back to Kolkata.
