CHAPTER 24
Swara : Sanskaar! Is there a stream here? I can hear the water bubbling.
Sanskaar : Shhhh… You’ll get to know soon. Just two more minutes. Come on!
After few more minutes, Sanskaar finally released Swara and told her to keep her eyes closed even after he removed the blindfold. He untied it and told Swara to slowly open her eyes.
Swara did and was utterly stunned by what she saw.
Swara : Sa…ns…kaar?
Sanskaar came and stood besides her and kept an arm on her shoulder.
Sanskaar : You like it?
Swara (still stunned) : I.. I…
Sanskaar (coming in front of her) : Swara? Kuch toh bolo! Tell something.
Swara looked at him.
Swara : What is this place? I have never come here.
Sanskaar smiled.
Sanskaar : No one was allowed to come here. I told Laksh, Mom, Badi Ma, Everyone.
He looked at her and cupped her cheek.

Sanskaar : I was three when Papa passed away. Laksh and his father were always the ones who took care of me and mom. They took us in as their own family.
Swara clutched his hand and nodded. She knew this.
Sanskaar : I was happy. But mom… mom used to be sad and whimsical. She missed Papa so much. I didn’t notice it at first, but later I saw that she used to disappear somewhere and when she came back, she used to look happy and contented. One day, I asked Laksh to come with me and we both followed her.
Swara (softly) : And then?
Sanskaar : Mom came all the way here. She sat by the stream and read a book or knitted socks for Laksh and me. I thought it was very weird that she came all the way here to rest. I went to go confront her. Laksh stopped me.
Swara (surprised) : Why?
Sanskaar (closing his eyes) : I still remember it like it was yesterday. Laksh was standing away from me, hiding behind another tree. I gestured that I was going to talk to mom and asked him to stay put but he shook his head. I went to where he was standing and he said,”Look at chachi! How happy she seems. This place must be very special to her. Let’s not disturb her. Come on.”
Sanskaar opened his eyes and smiled sadly. He led her to a rock like bench and they both sat down side by side.
Sanskaar : He always was able to see the bigger picture. He used to think so much before doing anything.
Swara closed her eyes and nodded, waiting for the rush of pain to hit her. But, she only felt a deep lingering sadness. She didn’t feel any pain just wistful. Swara looked down surprised, but then shook her head and asked him to continue.

Sanskaar : I saw Mom’s face. She looked so serene that I couldn’t bear to disturb her. We just sat there for hours and smiled seeing our mother smile.
Swara smiled and thought of the two adorable kids who loved their mother so much. Unwittingly, her arm circled around his and she leaned on him.
Sanskaar : It was three months later that I finally asked her about it. She told me that my Papa had made it for her.
He stood and led Swara to the clearing in the woods where there was a pavilion-like structure with trees acting as pillars. There were fairy lights draped around the trees and the light from the moon illuminated the place even more. The stream bubbling nearby was calming and refreshing. Beyond the pillar-like trees, there was a small cottage with straws on the roof.
Swara : This place is really beautiful. Chacha must have loved Chachi a lot.
She watched Sanskaar run his hand through the stream, his mouth turned upwards in a smile and his eyes soft and happy.
Sanskaar : I don’t remember anything about him. Whatever I know, it’s through Mom, Badi Ma and Bade Papa. He was the hero I’d never known. Mom told me so much about him that I began to think of him as the best dad ever even though he wasn’t with me anymore. (Giving a small laugh) Laksh and I even fought about that once. It nearly came to a fist fight.

Swara chuckled.
Swara : Boys never change, Do they? Adarsh and Sahil were the same way. They fought so much. Uttara was always ready to join as well. But tell me, What else did Chachi tell you?
Sanskaar : You know how your Chachi is. She loves the outdoors. (seeing Swara’s nod) I don’t exactly know how this idea got into Papa’s head but about a year after their wedding, he surprised her with this.
Almost as an afterthought, he spoke again.
Sanskaar : He blindfolded her… just like I did it for you.
Swara’s eyes looked at him sharply but his back was to her.
Sanskaar : Mom said she finds comfort and happiness here. She loved it so much.
Swara : Loved? She doesn’t come here anymore?
Sanskaar turned and faced Swara again. He shook his head.
Sanskaar : No. No one visits this place except for me. Listening to Mom’s stories, I fell enchanted by this place too. I longed to come here everyday and I started sneaking out as often as I could. No one knew except for Laksh. I got away with this for more than 2 years but then one day Mom found me building that hut over there.
Swara looked at the hut once more then turned to him.
Swara : You built it?
Sanskaar (nodding) : Yes! I did. I took a little help from Mali Kaka and few others though. Anyways, Mom saw me that day. She was so surprised and then observed the entire place. I had changed few things… Just a few of them so that no one knows but she found out anyways.

Swara (smiling) : Moms do that. They observe everything.
Sanskaar (chuckling) : Mom understood that I loved this place and she told me I could have it. That it was mine now and I could do whatever I want here. I asked if she didn’t want it and she said no. She said it was time to move on and if she ever wanted to come back here, she could always ask me. Everyone’s always given me what I want. Mom, Badi Ma, Bade Papa… Yahan tak ki even my cousin Laksh always gave me what I wanted. They didn’t spoil me but they never refused anything. I come here when I want to think. I come here when I feel like I’m not being a good person. I haven’t been a good person but God knows… God knows I’m trying my level best.
Sanskaar was looking down and Swara walked up to him. Her hands cupped his cheeks and saw that his eyes were slightly moist. Her heart went out to him.
She knew that Sanskaar loved his family a lot. They all did. But the depth to which he respected their feelings and remembered every single deed they did for him never failed to amaze her. Her arms went around his neck and she hugged him.

Swara : You’re a good man. You’re a good son and a good brother. You’ve always been.
Sanskaar closed his eyes. He hadn’t realised that he had needed to hear these words. He had always been the trouble maker, the impulsive one, the one who was prepared to be a wastrel for the rest of his life. He thought he didn’t care but he understood that he needed people to know the real him.
He didn’t want to be the man who drooled over each and every woman he saw. He didn’t want to be the blo*dy Charming Casanova. He wanted to be the responsible one. He wanted to be someone everyone could depend upon.
Swara released him from their hug and looked at him in the eye.
Swara : You’re a good man. An excellent man. A man who knows what is right and wrong. Your family is, and will always be proud of you. You’re number 1 in their eyes. Are you listening to me?
Sanskaar smiled and nodded. He felt slightly empty now that they weren’t hugging but he shook that feeling and looked at her sheepishly.

Sanskaar : This was supposed to be fun and look what I did.
Swara (softly) : Don’t feel bad. I certainly don’t. There’s more to you than you know, Sanskaar! Today certainly proved that. But I have one more question. Why haven’t I ever come here? Why did no one tell me?
Sanskaar : I forbade everyone, including Laksh to tell anyone anything about this place. I begged him to allow this to be just my secret haven. He came here if he wanted but he loved the gardens more. No one ever comes here. It’s mine. I told I would never share it with anyone.
Swara : Why bring me here then? Have you brought any other women here?
Sanskaar chuckled.
Sanskaar : No Swara! I’ve not brought anyone here other than you.
Swara (whispering) : But why me?
Sanskaar (his lips near her ear) : Because you’re special. Because you’re someone who needs to see this place. Because…. Because this is the one place where I can be myself and I wanted you to see it.
Swara (in the same tone) : Why?
Sanskaar (taking her arm and pulling her close) : Because I……..
