You and me (Shivika– Chapter 1)

Anika’s POV

The sun beamed at me, disturbing my peaceful sleep. Beep! Beep! I groaned and turned off the blaring sound of the alarm. My hatred for this is growing day by day. I got up and lazily pushed myself in the bathroom for shower.

Before going to the kitchen, I glanced at my reflection. Wearing a white shirt with a royal blue skirt, I did not look that bad. I glanced at my watch and realized that I was running late. If I don’t reach the bus stand in 20 mins, I’ll definitely miss the bus.

I walked to the kitchen, prepared myself a cup of coffee. Gulping it down, I stuffed a bread in my mouth. Quick Anika! You are going to be late.

After having my awesome breakfast, I ran a marathon to the bus stop. A sigh escaped my lips as I was just in time.

I took the bus to Malhotra industries. Samar Malhotra, my boss is young and kind but he hates people who are not punctual. That’s one of my biggest problems. I have never been a early riser. Be late, and you are in for some serious trouble.

Once I have reached, I took the lift and saw my desk, full of colourful files. I sighed.

Well there was some new girl beside my desk. Probably it’s her first day, that’s why she chatting. She doesn’t know her boss, he loathes people who wastes time.

“Hey Anika! I hope that’s not too much” Sir approached me and smiled.

“Well it’s as easy as a pie. Twenty five files in just an hour. ” I replied sarcastically.

“Oh good lord! I guess your second language is sarcasm, isn’t it? ” he laughed.

“Yeah! So I’ll get to work. Too less work, right? ” I sat on my desk and started to go through the files. In an hour, I finished and sent the files to his office.

The girl, Riya has joined today, approached me.

“Hey! ” she smiled. “I’m Riya ”

“Hello! I’m Anika. So enjoying your day here? ” I asked.

“Definitely! This place is amazing. The boss, he’s so friendly…” I cut her off.

“Wait till you see him angry”

“Well, we’ll see. By the way, everybody here is definitely a sweetheart. You know, the company, where I worked earlier was good but people were kind of mean. And about the boss, don’t even get me started. ” she continued to talk while I just smiled. She’s a chatterbox.

After a while, I cut her off as I realized its been almost half hour. ” Well I guess, I’ll see you in the lunch break as I have work to do now”

“Yeah! I’m so sorry. Please continue ”

I checked the presentation one last time, before mailing it. My stomach grumbled and I glanced at my watch. It was just time for lunch.

Soon Riya joined me for lunch. We sat at a table far away from crowd.

“You know I’m sleepyhead and waking up at 7 is a great deal for me” she said.

“Same here…. It really is hard to be on time” I replied.

“I have definitely told you so much about myself, so tell me something about yourself. Like your family and all…. ” Family.

Tears welled up in my eyes but I held them back.

“They are no more… ” I tried hard not to let my voice crack. 6 years. How much things have changed in these six years of my life.

“I’m really sorry” she apologized.

“You don’t need to be” I sighed and she started telling me about her brother, who is an adult but behaves like a 6 year old kid. I continued to munch on my lunch.

As we finished our lunch, she bid me goodbye and I walked to my desk. I was shocked at the number of files on my desk. Sir’s secretary, Tanya came to me.

“Lots of files, I know right but sir thinks it’s as easy as a pie for you” my jaw fell open. This man!

“Good luck, darling” she smiled at me and walked away, not before saying “You have got two and half hours by the way” The f**k. Just two and half hours?

The day was hectic.Exhausted, I reached my house. I so wish to call it home but what it remains is just a house. It is a small apartment. Result of pure hard work. It hurts that there is no one for me, to open the door, cook me dinner, wait for me and most importantly, someone or rather my family to rely upon.

It’s just because of two of my friends that I have become independent.

The least bit of energy is drained out that I don’t want to make myself dinner but my stomach demands food. Hey stomach! Don’t mind noodles for today, alright?

I made some noodles and turned on the television. Nothing interesting. I had my dinner in silence.

After cleaning the dishes, I went to bed and took out my diary from the drawer. It’s habit that I have, since I was a kid.

Dear diary,

Nothing special happened today except that today’s day so hectic and I met a very sweet and nice girl, Riya, who had joined today. I definitely see a great friend in her.

I’m very sleepy so I guess I’ll just go to bed.

With love,
Anika.
