SEALED WITH A KISS (OS)

One news changed my life forever. I laid in bed while the doctor checked me. I could see my mother looking worried as the doctor checked her daughter who had just fainted minutes ago. The doctor seemed worried as he asked my mother a question. “She doesn’t take all her medication, does she?” I was caught.
“Twinkle!”, my mother exclaimed, startling me. What was I to do? I had only a few months left to live and I did not want to live it with pills and medicine all day. I had the last stage of cancer, bone cancer. No matter how many times my mother persisted, I knew there was no cure. My thoughts were disturbed as the doctor spoke again.
“Leela ji, I think now is the time we have to shift Twinkle. If it goes on like this and she doesn’t take her medications, then…”. And just like that, I was shifted to a hospital care unit. I was to stay there for two weeks, for my chemotherapy. But I had lost all hopes when my reports had first gotten to me and on it had the word cancer. Now I was alone in the midst of many other patients, just like me. Bored, I picked up a magazine and flipped through it.
“Hey beautiful lady!” My eyes peeped over the top of the magazine as I saw a guy, rather handsome I must say. He came and sat next to me. His eyes sparkled as he talked. “Hi, I’m Kunj”, he said. “Twinkle”, I replied. His eyes lit up.
“Are you a patient here?” I scoffed and replied sarcastically, “No, I’m here for fun.” Surprisingly, he said, “Really? So am I.” He must have read my confused face so he began to explain himself. “I was a patient here, but now I am fit and fine. So I come here often to visit. You know, just for fun.”
A little girl came up to Kunj and tapped his knee. She spoke in her soft voice, “Uncle, did you bring chocolates for me?”

I looked over at Kunj, who pretended to think by tapping his chin with his forefinger. He smiled then pulled out a chocolate bar. The little girl gladly took it and kissed Kunj’s cheek before running away. I was amazed at the happening in front of me. “That was sweet.” Kunj turned towards me and raised his collar. He replied, “I’m not only sweet, but also talented. I’m a great dancer.” And with that, he started dancing in front of me. In the midst of dancing, he tripped over his foot. Next thing I knew, he was on the floor, rubbing his bottom. I laughed…after a long time, I laughed from my heart. I was brought out of my laughter when a lady walked up to me. Kunj too, stopped laughing.
“Miss Taneja, it is time for your chemotherapy.”
My face sunk. I was ready to run away. The last thing I wanted was to stick a needle into my vein. I rolled my eyes and Kunj seemed to notice. His eyes sparkled as if he had an idea. The he spoke, “You aren’t as strong as you look.” I squinted my eyes at him, “what do you mean?” He chuckled, “U are scared of a little needle.” He had hurt my ego and I was not going to let him go. “Excuse me mister, but I am not afraid of anything and I’ll prove it to you. I will go for my chemotherapy right now.’ I walked furiously away from him. When I turned back to look at him, he seemed to have a victorious smile on his face. It was as if this was all his plan.

It was now Christmas Eve and I was still stuck in this hell hole.
“Hey!”
I turned to find Kunj. He now comes to visit me everyday. He walked up to me and his smile faded. “What happened Kunj?”
“Someone very special to me seems upset.”
A small smile crept up to my face. Sometimes he made me feel so special. “That’s the smile I was looking for!” The smile came back to Kunj’s face as he handed me a chocolate bar. I reached out to take it when he suddenly pulled it back. Was this some sort of game? “Kunj, give it to me!” He laughed and I started chasing after him. He held the chocolate bar up high. I cursed him under my breath for being so damn tall. As I jumped to take the chocolate bar, I didn’t realize the proximity between us. Only after I felt his hand on my back and the heat from his body, did I realize our position. I locked eyes with him and got lost in those deep brown orbs. In a fraction of a moment, we removed ourselves from each other and looked around awkwardly. He finally broke the silence, “Come on Twinkle, I’m taking you out tonight.”
“But where?” He merely smiled and said, “You’ll see.”

I looked around. Little children were playing. Kunj had brought me to an orphanage. I watched as he handed out little gifts and chocolates to every little child. My eyes became moist from some weird feeling that I had never felt before. How could someone be this good? Kunj came back to me and broke my trance by snapping his fingers in front of my face. The clock struck twelve. “Merry Christmas Twinkle’, he said.
“Merry Christmas Kunj.” A familiar green substance caught my eye. I looked up. Kunj followed my gaze and saw what I saw: mistletoe. We both looked at each other. I suddenly felt no control over myself as I saw Kunj leaning in towards me. I felt his hand rest on my waist as I clutched onto his shirt on his shoulder. And then, his lips captured mine. His soft upper lips between my lips brought about a whole new feeling. A small gasp escaped my mouth as I felt a tug on my lower lip. I could feel him smile. We pulled put of the kiss. I bit my lower lip and looked at him. Suddenly, all the kids started clapping. Surprised, I looked at Kunj, who gave me a goofy smile. I gasped.

“It was all your plan?” He rubbed the back of his head. I hugged him quickly, burying my face into the crook of his neck. “I love you”, he whispered, and I smiled. The next day, I was looking all over for Kunj. He didn’t come to meet me today. I finally decide to ask the receptionist. She gave me a worried look. “Please tell me where Kunj is.” Her face showed disparity. She led me to a room. I looked through the window on the door and my heart skipped a beat at the sight. There was Kunj, on the hospital bed, on life support. I pushed open the door to go inside when two nurses pulled me out. I couldn’t think. I need to go to my Kunj. “Leave me! I want to go to my Kunj! Kunj, I’m coming!” The nurses seemed to ignore me as they held on to me tighter. Uncontrolled tears fell down my cheeks as I was led farther away from Kunj. The nurse spoke, “madam please control yourself. The patient is ill.”
“What happened to Kunj? Why is he laying like that?”
“He has cancer.”

My heart shattered. No this can’t be. Kunj was cured. He made me want to live again. He gave me hope. Now he couldn’t leave me alone. He just couldn’t.
“Your lying! Kunj doesn’t have cancer, he was cured!”
The nurse seemed to not believe me. “No maam, he was never cured. He is at the final stages of cancer. There is no hope left and Kunj knew that. So he decided to live the last few days of his life to the fullest. Only a miracle can now help him.” I was crushed. My body felt weak as I dropped to the ground. I walked into Kunj’s room when all the doctors had left. My body felt numb to see him in that condition. My Kunj, who always made me smile and was full of energy, was now laying on the bed, lifeless. I was angered at him.
“This is not fair Kunj. I won’t talk to you.” I wiped a tears off my cheek.
“You challenged me to get chemotherapy and I won the challenge. Now I challenge you. If you truly love me, then you will get better. Remember, being with you keeps me alive. Kunj Sarna, I challenge you to keep me alive. You can’t lose the challenge Kunj! You can’t!” I held his hand and could no longer control my tears. “I love you Kunj.” I whispered as I held tightly onto his hand.
______

He extended his hand out to me as I walked down the aisle. It was now six months later, and Kunj had won the challenge. We had kicked cancer’s ass. I put my hand in his as he gave me that same loving smile. “I do”, we said in unison and sealed our love with a kiss.
