“Sshhh arre Anika dekho yahaan” I heard someone whispering. I ignored it however. We were having our mid-terms and today was ‘Reckless Maths’ Day, even though I was bright A student I never hated anything in my life than this worse subject. God! I just wanted to get this over with. But the annoying sound didn’t stop. “Anika dekho idhar”. When I tilted my head sideways I noticed irritating Naina hissing at me. I knew what she wanted, every damn exams she needed help. Nope today it’s not gonna happen. “Show me your paper” she said with urgency. Why people just can’t put their own efforts. “Not today Naina, I am not gonna show you” I retorted back. “Naina and Anika what’s going on here” Shit! No doubt, It was our Principal, I think she had come for rounds. I glanced at the old lady who was eyeing us through her round-rimmed glasses. Damn I am gonna fail, how should I face Paapa. He will sue me for sure. “Explain now Ladies!”

She demanded. I don’t want to get in trouble at least not in academics. So I decided to say the truth, Naina opened her mouth to defend but it was too late. “Ma’am she was asking for answers” I said quickly. Naina snapped her head at me. She was rudely glaring at me, mumbling some profanities. God! What have I done? I have voluntarily added another enemy to my list. I was basically a class nerd, and everyone just hated me I don’t even know the reason. “Naina, come to the office now” Mrs. Gaur sternly said and marched out. “This isn’t over Anika” I heard Naina scoff.

Naina had her suspension for few days, and she needed to give Maths Exam separately once again. And today were results and as usual I had come with flying colours. Even Naina had got average marks. I was happy for her, she studied this time. I was guilty too, I wanted to apologise. I have tried to do it few times but failed miserably. When I came out of the classroom my eyes searched for Naina, who was standing near the bulletin board with her parents. She had her head hung low, and was just nodding dumbly to whatever her folks were saying. It looked like they were warning of her of something. I approached them.

They were leaving the hallways, and Naina followed them dumbly. “Naina I needed to speak to you” I squeaked out, grabbing the attention of the three. Her parents just informed her to return soon and disappeared. “Look Anika I know, what you are gonna say and please I don’t need your fake apology” she spit at me clenching her jaws. I was just….. before I could think of anything else I was met with a rough blow. I gasped at the impact, sure my lips busted damn this girl is strong. “And you deserved it b*t*h”

I was happy to show my results to my dad, but until this moment. He would be asking bunch of stupid questions instead of praising me for my achievement. My dad is not that rude but since my mother had passed away few years ago, he had become a rigid person. That day I had not only lost my mother but my dad too, but I had my daadi’s support. She was my pillar.

And as expected I just got grounded. What the hell is my life?
