Her Past

Every person has a past,
Some have them so pleasant that they want to memorize it, while
Some have them so dreadful that they want to forget it.

The past cannot be changed, forgotten, edited or erased.
It can only be accepted.

Sarah’s POV

“Riddhima! Riddhima!”

I called this girl a lot many times but she is least bothered. Where is she lost? Her eyes told that she was irritated, but by what?

Following her gaze, I was surprised to see her looking at Vansh inclining her eyebrows, while Vansh, on the other hand was totally busy looking.. no no staring her.

I couldn’t believe Vansh was noticing a girl. Something’s fishy. Well, I’ll find it out later. Bit first I need to talk to Riddhima.

Jerking her by her shoulders lightly, I brought her out of thinking.

“I asked you something and instead of answering me you’re busy in your own thoughts. Where were you lost?” I asked her in a little strict tone.

“Huh! What?” she asked sheepishly as she had no idea of what I was talking about.

“Riddhima, in few days you’re going to get discharged. What have you thought about your life?” I asked her but instead of answering me, she stayed quiet. What’s wrong with her? Now anyone isn’t staring her.

“Riddhima! Answer me.”

“Don’t know” she replied.

“Don’t know! Seriously Riddhima!” I exclaimed and she shook her head.

“I don’t want to talk anymore. I just want to sleep” she sad sounding sleepy. I guess the medicines are making her feel drowsy. The discussion can be done later on, first she needs to rest.

Helping her lay down on the bed, I covered her with a duvet. In no time, sleep engulfed her.

Looking at her pale face and red-puffed eyes, I felt very bad. This innocent soul have suffered a lot, but not anymore.

It’s said that no one can change the past, but I will try my best to shape a better future for Riddhima.

Sitting in my cabin, my mind wandered around the various happenings that occurred in a short period of time.

How Vansh lost his dream? How broken he was? How Uma aunty changed his view point. And now he was again that cheerful Vansh, but with a new set of dreams.

On the other hand was Riddhima. How Riddhima’s life changed in a blink of eye. How she lost her only family? But there was no one to support her. She was still broken and day by day she was breaking more.

Beep. Beep.

My chain of thoughts were broken by the alarm that indicated 4 pm, time to take a round around the hospital. Getting up I proceeded towards my patients.

Passing several wards, I reached Riddhima’s ward. She was sleeping peacefully. I had no intentions to wake her up, so I decided to head back towards my cabin.

As I was about to exit the room, I heard a voice. It was coming from the adjacent bed, which was occupied by Vansh.

Making my way towards his bed, I saw Dr. Batra telling him some exercises. And from the expressions Vansh was giving, I could acknowledge that he was not at all interested in the exercises.

Dr. Batra is a well-experienced doctor. His way of treating his patients is something that I admired. But at times, he behaves strictly. And now his strict mode was on.

Poor Vansh!

I bit my inner cheek to stop myself from smiling.

“Make sure you do all the exercises regularly.” saying this Dr. Batra exited the ward and Vansh sighed with relief.

“What sort of doctor you have in your hospital?”

“Why?” I asked trying to suppress my smile.

“Seriously from past half an hour he is busy saying bend your knee at 90° and then at 0°. Now how the hell do I know that how where is 90° or 0° when I don’t even have a protractor.”

I couldn’t help myself smile at his lame talks.

“And if this wasn’t enough, he again and again asked ‘Yes, how’re you feeling?’.” Vansh mimicked Dr. Batra by moving his index finger up his nose, as if setting spectacles.

I broke out into fits of laughter seeing him act like Dr. Batra.

“Sarah, stop it!” he whined like a child, “Here my mood is very bad because of that Dr. and now you also.”

“Ok, Ok. Lets talk about something else” I suggested.

“Yes.”

Vansh’s POV

Talking with Sarah after the unwanted session with Dr. Batra, I felt relaxed. In no time, my mood was much better.

It is correctly said that sometimes a conversation with your friends is all the therapy we need.

It’s after a very long time that I had such a long talk with her. Talking with her, I realized how much my life have changed. How much I craved for these long talks with her?

But deep inside I was restless. Restless to know about Riddhima.

“How’s your professional life Sarah?” I asked trying to take out some information.

“It’s good” she replied sounding a bit dejected.

“What happened? What’s bothering you?”

“It’s Riddhima, one of my patient.”

“Riddhima, the girl with whom I’m sharing this ward?”

She nodded her head smiling slightly.

“Yes, the same girl whom you were staring at” she smirked. Even Sarah caught me.

I gave her a small smile. This was again so embarrassing. I need to distract her otherwise she would start teasing me.

“Umm.. What related to her is bothering you?” I asked trying to divert the topic.

“Everything related to her is bothering me Vansh!” She said giving a painful look. The expressions that Sarah was giving were enough to tell that it was something very serious and tragic.

“That girl Riddhima is so alone. She is nothing what she used to be. She is just like a body without soul” she continued.

Something in me broke listening the lines Sarah said.

“What happened?” the words came out of my mouth on their own.

“Vansh she is facing a life, which no one wants to face.”

“What do you mean? Tell me properly.” Now I was hell curious to know about her.

“God have been so cruel to her. At a very young age, she lost her parents. The time when a child needs parent’s love and care, she was left at the door of orphanage with no one to nurture her. The age when parents teach their child to walk, there was no one to pick her up when she stumbled and fell. She spent her childhood all alone behind those tall iron gates of the orphanage.”

“But one day, her dark life got illuminated with the arrival of Sejal. Sejal changed her gloomy life to a happy one. In no time, they became inseparable. Sejal showed her a life beyond those tall iron gates of the orphanage. She taught her to become strong. She taught her to face the cruel world. Sejal became her lifeline and her only family.”

“Her life was going so smooth, but one day everything turned upside down. I don’t know whether the accident was done deliberately or not, but that accident changed her whole life. Her only family left her. Sejal left her all alone to deal with this cruel world.”

By the time Sarah finished, my eyes were full of tears. I don’t know why my heart was paining. Was it because of the harsh truth that Sarah told or something else?

But suddenly, something struck me. ‘Sejal’. This name sounds so known. I heard it somewhere, but where?

“Sejal?” I asked Sarah.

“Yes, you’re thinking right. The same Sejal who died in a car accident six months ago and whose heart have been transplanted to Sia.”

I still remember the day when doctor called me telling that they got a donor whose heart can be transplanted to Sia. I was so happy that day that my happiness knew no bounds. My Sia was going to be fine once again. She would again be that Sia, who loved to travel.

But I did not know that my happiness were worth someone else’s sadness. . A lone tear escaped my eye when I realized that the reason for my happiness was a the one who was deprive happiness.

Sometimes destiny plays a cruel game. By snatching a person’s happiness, she gives it someone else.

I cannot be so selfish to leave a person to drown in the pool of sorrow, especially when the person is the reason for my happiness.

That moment I made my mind to help her. I made my mind to make her future better than her past.

“Sarah I want to help her?”

As these words left my mouth, she looked at me as if I were a ghost.

“How will you help her?” she asked.

I will help her, but how? I was clueless. I shrugged my shoulders not knowing what to answer.

“She doesn’t need any financial help Vansh, she needs someone who can nurture her, someone with whom she can share her problems, someone who can lend her a shoulder when she is crying, someone to tell her that she is not alone in this cruel world.”

“You have a family Vansh, but she is all alone. All she needs is love and care. She needs someone to stand by her when she feels that the world is against her.”

“Now tell me, are you ready to help her?” she asked in a dominating tone.

“Kehte hain agar haunsle buland ho to koshish karne se ghabrana nahi chahiye, fir chahe vo koshish majboot se majboot chattan ko todne ki ho ya kisi toote hue insaan ko jodne ki.”

(It’s said that if we have have spirits, then we must not be afraid to try, whether that attempt to break the hardest rocks or an attempt to amend a broken person.)

“I know that scars on soul are hard to heal, but that doesn’t means that healing them is impossible. I’ll try Sarah, ” I spoke with determination in my voice.

“I knew it that you will never let an innocent soul suffer.” she said with a proud smile.

“But for that she needs to move on. We need to make her understand that her life is worth more. We need change her perspective regarding her life. We need to strengthen her hope to live. And I know what to do to make her understand.”

“What you will do?” I asked.

“Well, that you will come to know soon.”

“Ok.”

“What do you feel for her?” Sarah asked after minutes of silence.

“Means?” I asked her not understanding what she meant.

“I mean why do you want to help her? It’s not that you feel sympathy for her or do you?” she asked raising her eyebrows.

“I t’s not that I pity her. I’m doing this out of humanity. I just want to shape a better future for her. That’s it.”

“Let’s see” she said and bidding me bye, left for her cabin.

What did she mean by ‘Let’s see.’ I’m doing this just to make her life better. And it’s all out of humanity. That’s it.

‘Am I doing this out of humanity or the reason is something else?’ I asked myself. To be honest, I’m confused and all I need is a nap.

Laying on my bed I closed my eyes and drifted into my laala land.
