She smiled and walked backwards looking me…First time.,I felt something wrong with her smile…I wasn’t sure..may be random assumption….may be a gut feeling!! As I opened the lock.,I noticed my bracelet missing…When I tried to lit those lamps,it was there in my wrist…..Puzzled over it,I pulled the door open,and saw a bag on the door way…
“Radhi..Keep that inside…I will come taking those lamps…Its late…why din’t you take the exhausted ones…Always chatting and playing…”,her Mom’s words turned feeble as she descended to the ground floor…..May be hearing the click sound of the door to open.,she guessed it to be Radhika…Obvious!! and who would expect me??..I quickly rushed inside,picking the bag…placing it over the table.,I called her…There was a complete silence.,I peeped inside the room.,and she quickly hid something behind her back…
“I missed my bracelet here…Find it before your Mom gets it..Okay?”,I said hurriedly standing near the door…
But what did she hide….I saw the door way once.,and stepped fast inside…She stood blinking.,with an arm length of distance between us,I pulled her hand only to see a folder….Folder!!… A light lavender color transparent one.,of Mini laptop size…She tried to pull back….I got a glimpse of silver metal shining inside…..Ah!! that;s my bracelet!! ..Now…Am so curious to see what else she has in that folder…. But..but…her mom!!…Why did I ask Sam to return fast…It seems.,this little one is having one good treasure for me to hunt down…!! She neither pulled her hand back.,nor looked me.,but stood looking the ground… Huh!! What’s there in the ground??
“Have it safe”,I whispered in her ear and quickly moved out…
I had kept the main door open….God!!…How am I going to convince her mom about my presence here?… I turned and noticed her disappointed look to me.. “Radhika…Your mom came home”, hissed and moved towards the door…
I waited for her mom to come back….Leaving unnoticed may turn adverse,for our love,when I bring the topic…moreover.,I don’t want to have bad impression about me…!! Her mom halted on her tracks looking me to stand in the middle of their hall…Yet..she managed to smile at this unexpected,unnecessary guest..I have heard from Sam that she is one strict Mom unlike our parents..,she never hesitates to slap Radhika if she does any mischief…Well..My little darling is known for her mischief,still how could someone raise hand even after looking her cute face….
“Sit..!!Please…”,her mom said surprising me….She din’t ask about me….Smart move!!
“Yea..Aunty…I was waiting for you…She was scared!”,I said a simple one based on the input I receivedfrom Sam….She smiled and turned her head but I was shocked looking her expression…Now what went wrong..I turned around…But what..!! She was standing still in the same way….Hair.,dress messed…I expected her mom to glare me…But No!!
“What have you done to yourself?”,her mom asked shocked.,placing the plate she had,over the table before..
I saw Radhika to be in a ‘ready to break down at any moment’ mode….What the heck! I did say her..Still..!! what made her to welcome her mom like this…Her lips pouted for a sad one….I couldn’t get a hint….but Am sure…..If its someone who could handle the situation.,It’s only me!!..
When her mom held her shoulder.,I said,”Aunty.,she slipped in steps…That’s why…”..
Her mom gave a annoyed look to her…”I told you isn’t”,she said…
Now..it’s getting worse.,I should clear things about my presence there, at this hour and move…
“Sam called me to inform about shopping…When I came here.,I saw her to slip down….and Power went off….Sam told she scares to stay alone..Ah…hmm…That’s why…I waited here for you…”,I said not so confident on my story….Her mom turned to my side…
“Thank you Arjun..!”,she smiled….
I felt so relieved..God..! That was first time she speaks with me..though we have had exchanged few formal nods when we get to meet at times…Then..I realized.,I should have developed a good bond with her long before….I was silly to just nod my head as a response to her smile…. My gaze shifted to Radhika..who clutched her skirt a little.,with her gaze down.,nodding negative for some questions her mom asked…. Being irritated with her nod.,her mom saw me…I was in the same page…Blank!!!
“Ah..You..Sit down..Please…”,she said and moved towards their kitchen…
I was perplexed.,how and why she had no doubts about my presence there at their home with her daughter alone…
“Radhu…you…”,I heard Sam’s voice to stop abruptly… “Bhai..here?”,she asked and I re-played my half-truth story… “Did she get hurt..”,Sam enquired….
“I asked…”,her mom responded as she came with a glass of something…
Grasping the momentary unexpected link.,I said.,”Yea…I too asked..But she din’t reply anything..She stayed silent in her room..”,I heaved a sigh..Good..! Now the story is clear….
“Sorry for the inconvenience….Prena di said.,you,even avoided shopping because of your work..And now..Am…”,her mom earnestly apologized..
“Please don’t be Aunty..!! I just happened to be here”,I said and saw her.,who still had no thought to look me…! Time and again I waited for her one glance sipping the sweet drink her mom offered…but No!!
“Why are you silent..Any prob..”,Sam asked alarmed…
“Have you got hurt…what Radhi…..How many times I told you to be careful in steps…..you never listen me…Look yourself…”,her mom said worried adjusting her hair….She raised her head to see her mom and I too was shocked like others,to find her eyes filled with tears…her face almost drained…..Sam was the first to ask..”What’s wrong…Radhu…”…
“Am sorrry Mom…I….I …never…lis…Listened…you….”,she said broken…
Next few minutes.,I stood watching her to break into fresh tears,Sam to be confused with her tears and her mom in same state….Her mom shook her….but she hugged her mom crying….din’t even bothered to look me….well..!!…If she really needs to convey something….why can’t she?…..Her mom patted her back.,and signaled Sam to look inside that room..where she had been.,minutes before!…Now.,It was like watching a unknown language movie when you are in a bad mood!!…I saw Sam to pull Radhika to face her…Her mom shook her head defeated as she walked towards the sofa….,but My eyes glued on those two….
“That…This is why I never leave her alone…She keeps pondering over the past…Missing her dad!!”,her mom sighed dejected….I looked her mom confused…Reading my confusion she continued..”Hmm..her dad got a sudden cardiac arrest..when she was alone with him at home….She was then 9 yrs old.,until I came home and noticed,she wasn’t aware of the situation..,she was in the same room doing homework…she was unable to digest the fact still..so…she..even..now…. you see…Its been 13 yrs still..”,her mom was unable to continue further being distressed with Radhika’s nature…
But..What does that has to do now? I was here…and how was her mom so sure that she missed her dad…?
“If you keep crying.,I will ask Aunty to lock that folder inside her cupboard”,I heard Sam to say and she stood leaning on her shoulder….
“Sam..Leave it..I will take care…Arjun is waiting for you”,her mom said…
“Bhai..Pls…”,Sam pleaded… I nodded wondering at her behavior…Am Sure..what her mom said has nothing to do with her tears….May be till yesterday….she could have been like that….but not today!!
“Arjun…Why are you still standing…Well…Sam won’t leave this place.,until she convinces Radhika…Such a sweet girl!!”,her mom said and I smiled in response…. “Ah…I guess…you are uncomfortable here…I will come home with Sam…”,she said…
“Not like that Aunty..!! I was….just….”,I stuttered looking Radhika….
“Tats ok..!! Radhi has told about you…! I forgot to congratulate you….Young Entrepreneur Award..!! Isn’t…you made your parents proud…!! “,she said…
I was able to only smile back….my mind stuck with the word…Folder!! Is it the same…! It did have my bracelet….else…I sat confused….when I turned to my right..her mom wasn’t there…
It was 20 mins her mom came home…I got up….I saw her mom to speak something strictly…..may be she would have thought,Radhika’s tears was the reason…I dint respond…”is it away to behave…are you still a kid…”,her mom raised her tone..
She sniffed her nose…this is first time am seeing her like this…..her mom came to pick something from the shopping bag..
“Radhu…who said so…how will I forget you….idiot girl…!! Thinking too much…when you are alone…!! “,Sam said…
Oh..she had asked something like that.!!…
“Aunty…I will take Radhu with me to Goa…Will ask Neil to find a guy…is it ok”,Sam asked like convincing a crying kid…
“Double Ok!…have this cry baby with you,”her mom fake glared at her…
Are they nuts?? She had been pouring her heart out….and they dint bother to ask the reason….Was she regretting the moment spent with me? ..Why the hell,she can’t look me now??? ….I grew impatient….
“Promise..??”,she asked like kid..and apologized for Some thing….
I couldn’t withstand that anymore…..my mind kept grooving on that folder issue…which folder was Sam talking about?…..As though she had read my mind….she came with that same folder,and Sam stood smiling….she quickly turned around like a kid hiding chocolate and picked one pic,extended that to Sam…!!
Wasn’t she crying minutes before..and now why to smile..just like a kid…but…
“Yay…!! I got my picture…”,Sam squealed dramatically..and said..”deal….I will call you every weekend”..
Oh…when I was seriously thinking..,they had spoken something this silly….still…wait…I read the folder…tagged as Memories…!! Memories???? What does my bracelet has to do there…? Why should it stay as a memory…
“Finally you smiled…ah…poor you Sam..!! “,her mom said…
Sam came smiling to me….my mind…quickly connected all the dots…few…couldn’t solve…few solved… her words..tears…silence…folder…..I saw her…and she looked me once..a painful one…!! Enough to freeze me…!! Her eyes slowly made its way to ground….
“You got late by half an hour because of Radhi..”,her mom said as we stepped near the door…
“I forgot one…”,Sam rushed and rummaged the bag….” Radhu…Christmas star…!! New color….”..
I saw her…her mom and Sam busy with each other…She snapped a look to me…..with tears!….next sec she saw the star with a defeated smirk….Still.,she gave a kiddish smile to Sam…!!
I got that…!! She wasn’t a little one…!! Instead considering all of us so….Sam went to her…
“Aunty…I need to speak with you.”,I said…her mom smiled….and she looked me confused…
“Yes…tell me Arjun”,her mom asked….
Looking our gaze…Sam saw both of us…and She.,nodded her head in negative….Good!! So my guess was correct!!… My sister.,held her left palm as assurance…oh !! That’s great…
“Aunty…I wish..to marry Radhika with your blessings…”,I said clear.,humble and confidant….
Aunty’s forehead creased a little,then she saw radhika who was standing behind…the same place…near that room….She dared to see her mom…
“She doesn’t know a thing…I just…want to…”
“Arjun…don’t take me wrong….pls…leave..”,her mom said…that was equal to a slap….She gave one disgraced look to Radhika….It pricked me!!
“Aunty…please…listen me once…”,I tried to plead…though I myself had no idea of how am going to take the proposal further….I din’t think about it today….but I can’t let her down.,and now after bringing the topic…Definitely Not!!
“What’s all this Radhika…”,her mom asked authoritative surprising me….the girls jerked at that…I dint expect such a bold voice from her…Anyone would expect her to be soft character with her appearance….I heard Radhika sobbing…
“No..pls..she is not at fault…”,I blurted just to save the moment….
“Yes…Fault…it is…Radhika..is this how you behave with your best friends’s family?..”,she admonished..and caught her arm…
Well…that was for both of us…!! I got it…!! I saw Sam to get tears looking her mom!!
“Mom…am sorry…!!”,she said feeble…sobbing a little….and tried to remove her hand from Sam’s hold….My sister was in the verge of crying.,holding her hand..
“Sam…Please don’t say this to Prena di or your dad…Okay?? Arjun you too…Please don’t spoil our friendship…Just a month we will be here..,and you kids don’t bring any embarrassing situations for us….”
“Aunty…”,Sam had tears now…
“Look..Radhi…your friend is crying….This is what you want to give her at last??…..”,her mom asked with some earnest hope in her voice….
I was pulled back to our minutes before lovely moments..,that dining table and chair…the place where I twirled her…Just half an hour back…And now..Her mom wants to wipe every moment of ours completely…
I JUST CANT WITHSTAND THIS ANYMORE….My every cell was ready to burst in anger….If they din’t accept for my love…I am so not going to let anyone sleep tonight…I texted my dad to reach her home…’Please’ in bold…Enough!! he will come…!! I knew…. I saw the trio to be in a emotional moment….What nonsense!! I love her.!! I just want to pull her from this place and scold till my heart’s content for crying this much….Heck!! Did she really think I will leave her even after her confession…?
Minutes were passing..What makes my parents this late…Can’t they just lock the door and walk here…My eyes caught her dad’s Portrait…Round face.,captivating eyes.,dark hair.,very handsome he was in that picture..!!
“Why did you call us..?”,I heard my dad’s voice…. “Radhu..why are you crying…”,My mom asked next…
Her mom gave me one glare and asked them to take a seat…Hospitality at its peak! while I was already asked to leave!! I saw her to gulp her tears….
“Ah..Nothing…She slipped in steps it seems….That’s why…I was scolding..and”,her mom stuttered…
“Why do you scold an already hurt child”,My mom spoke in her favor…but I saw my dad to look me.,a stern gaze…!!
“Dad…I love Radhika!! I want to marry her…I asked Aunty’s permission…”,I said exactly like a announcement…I was so miffed maintaining a humble nature….My dad gave a shocked expression which was amiss with my mom…Okay…! now I get the term ‘we’ mentioned by Sam…It’s My mom and sister who noticed this…
“I said…Leave the topic..!”,her mom said steely….. “Prena di…..Am sorry!..”,she saw my mom…
“No..Nandhini…They..he..just..said..what he felt…umm…we won’t force Radhu…”,My mom gave her decision as her reply.. Not bad!!
“What…di….what she knows..and…I never thought..Radhika will embarrass me like this”,her mom said unhappy with the situation….
“Nand…”,my dad’s words were cut in the middle…
“Sorry…! I apologize on my daughter’s behalf….Lets forge…”
“No..! Please..!! She is a responsible child..! Don’t get her wrong..I apologize on my son’s behalf…He took things simple…”,My dad convinced her…
“I know about Arjun..!! She would have said something..he thought like this…playful..she is…I shouldn’t have let her there…Now see..we people are left…”,
“Excuse Me!!”,I said high…. I had been silent only to get to know their views.,but they were on a apology marathon and giving conduct certificates to us…
“I don’t get you all…Dad..!! I din’t do anything wrong that you are apologizing…Am seeking permission for our love…”, I finished with my hands gesturing my feeling… My confusion and irritation..!! They blinked confused…
Her mom!!..Must admit…! Clever..! she quickly got the note…
“Arjun.. I can’t get my daughter married to you….hope you won’t let my decision to affect our relationship….Your parents are more like a family for me..! got that!!”,She gave a point blank answer…
