A Garden Love
One Shot
The clock strike 4 Pm, Sam hurried to finish the remaining works. she did knock down few books while arranging the inhouse library. Quick.! Hurry up! Fast., her brain sent alarming signals to every cell of her body. She sighed when the rack of books were done and hurried out. Anyone may guess that she is getting late to catch a train, but No.. she walked past 2 streets, and reached her destination, she push opened
the Huge single Iron gate and there, she was warmly welcomed by a flowery garden. Sam stood 5 secs admiring the garden till her eyes can hold without a blink. A wide heart warming smile adorned her face as she stepped her foot inside. Neil just lifted his head hearing the creek sound of door open. He glanced his watch a sec.,its 4.10 he smiled, he settled leisurely watching his child hood friend’s dazed walk in his garden.
No.. her garden that would be more appropriate. Its a routine. Sam his childhood friend, Samaira khanna would come daily sharp at 4 to his house to enjoy the evening at her garden. Nothing could stop her other than the strict orders from her family. She was a princess till her dad was alive, now its the opposite.Her mom Piyali and brother Jai never acknowledged her presence. Samaira had a dream to become a landscape
architect.. Neil really found her different when she said that 5 years ago, when they were at 12th grade.. He had never seen Sam giving importance to someone’s persona, wealth or academics., its just a good heart is what she looks for. A usual friend in deed could easily escalate her love for the person. When he saw her as a evening college student for a science course a year back he couldn’t believe his eyes. He was
there after 4 yrs of studies in Abroad. He took charge of his dad’s business., and wanted to share the news with Sam. His words froze,When she walked past him. She looked weak., annoyed and disturbed. Not a smile. Her energetic walk was also amiss. She looked totally annoyed with her life. “Am there just like a furniture,Neil. Thanks to bro. At least he let me for a evening college” her words were still fresh in his mind. He never understood why she was there like a caged bird. She clearly avoided the topic every time when Neil asked her. Its only his dry garden gave him the chance to meet her daily.
“Why don’t you maintain your Garden properly ? ” she asked in a clear annoying voice when she visited his place 6 months back.
“Well., there is a Gardener. I don’t know what’s wrong. You get in Sammy..”He said as he moved in.
She sat there in balcony and looked sadly over his disoriented garden.. He din’t disturb her.,suddenly out of the blue she asked “Neil.. Would u mind if I maintain your garden ?’
“what?’
“hmm..Like a gardener. ” she said in a meek voice.
“Like a gardener?.. what Rubbish? Think before you speak ” his irritation was visible.. Why does she need to think like this.. Like a Gardener.. Sh*t.. How such words pop up in her brain.
“Sorry..Its just I felt bad see the plants dying..” she saw him, but he was silent . She continued “The space on the left is wasted with shrubs. You can have wall creepy ones.. and this one..”She turned around saying ” here.. you could have potted plants…”
“Sam.. You wanna change this Garden?” Neil asked listening her. She never spoke audible in these 6 months. She nodded postive.. He smiled and said “Go ahead.”
That’s how she started visiting here daily.. Sometimes he would see her early morning.,feeding plants., and soiling.. She would revive, pot on, graft the plants with utmost attention that she forgets the entire world around. This occupied her mind a lot. The small area of the garden started to have a new fresh life along with her. This turned as her world. He was happy to see her smile. The smile which reaches her eyes.. He holded his thought of selling this house citing its near to his office. He started spending time with her in gardening., Purchasing the plants and creepers of her choice.
The house got a enchanting look within next 3 months. The side yards got a new look with grass pavers and climbers.. Creepers on the front left area.. Ferns near the entrance..Hibiscus.,Oleander.,Bougean villea., Golden champa., Dahlias., His eyes moved to every plant along with his thoughts.. He stressed his mind a little to remember the names of next two plants.. Sam would ask their names almost everyday which made him to memorize Ixora Crepe Jamines and Chinese Trumpet creepers, as this is what he forgets often.He would record in his phone when she comes up with a new variety. one such thing is Chiliean bell flowers.. yet to make its presence here.. The Roses is her favorite of all.
He never thought he would learn about plants and its varieties.
What if that day, Sam din’t come here to meet him, he would have missed the chance to be with her daily. He smiled thinking about his thoughts..
“Finally the Surprise lilies are ready to blossom” Sam cheerful voice brought him back.
“You look better now” he said without his knowledge.. She gave a good look on herself before laughing “Iam looking dirty.. I know..! was cleaning the library, was in a hurry to meet my sweethearts” she said looking the flowery garden.
“sweethearts? Flowers?? this Garden??” he asked still dazed at her antics.
“hmmm..Yes.. They never fail to keep me happy.. Am feeling myself being here. amidst this fragrnace of fresh wet soil mixed with the aroma of each flowers.. There is no words to describe the feel when you see your favorite flower to bloom..”
Her chirpiness was broken by Rubina’s voice “Hey Sam.. the garden looks lovely..” she said as she came in..
Rubina., the next house girl..She has a eye on Neil and he too knows that. She befriended with Sam just to step inside his house. Sam being a noble being, believed that Rubina too loves gardening . Her mom would just pass filthy comments about Sam visiting here daily at evening. Neil and Sam knew, but they din’t bother a lot. Neil was concerned about sam. What if her family scold or hurt her? Her family
never knew she comes here. Its in the name of evening college she visits here. Neil helped in fake attendance and notes.His eyes fell on Arabian Jasmine flowers, swaying to the rtythm of the evening breeze. He was surprised when the timid sam came with all those plans of fooling her family just for the sake of a garden.. He smiled. Rubina and Sam was near Pineapple lilies, he could see Sam curiously explaining
but Rubina had eyes on Neil who just peeped out from balcony. He sighed and went inside.
After some time.,Rubina left. But her words were like thorns stinging on sam’s heart..Her blood boiled thinking how her family fixed
her alliance with Saral Joshi.,a well known womanizer. Am I that worse.? her self thought sympathized her. She looked the bags of freshly arrived shrub Roses. They have to be plant out tomorrow. She loved planting new varieties with Neil.. But., Rubina mocked her passion as a waste of time.. was she really correct? what if Neil goes away from this house after his marriage as Rubina said? who will take care of this garden?
Am I really a fool visiting here like she said? there is gonna be no use in your life ’cause of the time you spend here.. her words sounded meaningful now.
Neil was in the kitchen listening the entire conversation. He came out with coffee mugs and called her. Sam sat looking him. She remembered the school prank where her seniors asked to tie Rakhi for Neil. She neglected and cried at last when she was pressed more. Why Neil din’t understand that Iam in love with him.. may be he thinks, am not worthy enough to get him, he is right.. She blinked twice before sipping her coffee.
“Why are you starring me like a alien” Neil asked with a smile.. That dimple smile which swept her heart. May be he is not affected like the way she is.. She thought that Rubina’s words had a point. she should stop coming here from Today.. No Tomorrow.. I will plant the new ones and leave the garden.. Leave the Garden.. The thoughts pained her.she saw Neil..have to leave Neil also.. Its going to be hard.This is why
she kept her away from him when he came back. The Garden was the reason .. She just closed her eyes. She loved this garden since her childhood, that was the reason she came here the other day. She never thought she will get this attached to the Garden and its owner again!. Rubina was correct I should leave. She decided and got up.
Neil pulled her hand. “Sit Sammy” he said.. He had been observing her for the past minutes and could guess what she thinks. “Sam..Will u come tomorrow?” he asked a plain question
“Why not.. Shrub Roses.. and Miniature roses. I will Plant” she said with stammering her words. she left bidding bye within next few minutes.

The next morning started as usual., Sam decided to plant out those Roses early morning. So, she took an excuse for market. She knew Neil would be fast asleep now. But Neil knew she will definitely try to avoid him.. So he got ready early.. Sam stood rooted when she saw Neil watering the plants. “Morning Sammy!!” he wished without turning.
“Hey.. Morning..” her plain voice greeted back.
“Shall we?’ he took the bags and asked.. she nodded and followed him. She just admired the new view this house got with those God sent gifts..
Neil walked fast and knelt before a pit “Sammy here ” he saw her. He made it as a habit of planting together. Sam was happy seeing his enthusiasm.. she helped him. A sharp streak of raising sun fell on her face. Neil saw her face glowing in natural light.. “Sammy.. I love You” he said. She looked his face in silence.. She din’t reply but left the place fast. Neil din’t force her. He saw the Surprise lilies.. “I know you will bring her back” he said smiling at those buds
He made it fast to return in the evening, Sam knows its Friday and he would be back to visit his parents. she would definitely come to his place guessing the reason of his absence.. He drove fast with a smile thinking about her surprised face on seeing him. The car took the turn., and there he saw a group of people before his house. He got down, and saw Sam standing in the middle.. Its Nahina.. Rubina’s mom scolding her on the middle of the road.. what the.. “Whats happening here?” he asked.. after few minutes of Nahina’s talk he understood Sam’s character was targeted as Rubina has witnessed something. He got enraged.
He saw Rubina there and went to her “Can u please tell me what you saw Sam doing?” he asked
“I saw you both kissing each other in the garden and getting..”
Slap.!..Slap.. !! He slapped before she could finish her filthy accusation. The crowd gasped. He warned everyone with his look and said “We are going to get married. So.. Get lost now!”
Sam raised her head to look him then. She walked back to her home.. He tried to reach her but she ran. He thought not to trouble her more.. Rubina shivered at the anger emitted through his eyes.. He glared her and went inside, he moved towards the blossomed lilies. He felt the happiness which Sam used to speak about. He spoke with his mom about the incidents and asked her to approach Sam’s family with their
proposal.. Prena was glad with the decision.. Neil was so engrossed with Sam’s thoughts that he forgot he was still outside his house sitting on the greenery before his garden. It was past 12.. Something pulled him back, he went to his car still on the road , without his knowledge he drove to Sam’s house..The moment he entered the lane Neil saw a thin figure and its none other than Sam standing outside her house on the road. The house had no lights on,indicating that none is awake inside. Neil took her with him ignoring her refusals. He could sense her silent sobs.. “Was it because of that stupid Rubina?’ he asked. she nodded.. They would have threatened of disowning her.. He guessed..
The moment he got inside his home., he angrily barked at her “what the hell is wrong with you Sam? I told you about Rubina,still you befriended with her and see to what extend she had tarnished your name. and now., Can’t you call me? Why can’t you fight back? bearing insults, sacrificing your dreams, longing for your passion…what’s the need to tolerate and suffer…..when.. when.. you have me” Sam was silent..
He calmed himself ,after a moment ., “Is my love that invisible?” he asked in a soft tone. Before going to his
room he said “I wish to get my sammy back once.,I promise ….I will.. never let her go.. ”
Tears start streaming down in Sam’s cheeks.. Accusation,Insult,rejection..the day gave her a lot .. finally.. Love.. Her love..! She knew Neil did like her in her school days. But..Love?? His words started to playback in her mind.. “The lilies have bloomed” A voice broke her thoughts abruptly. He stared her and went.. She remembered her Punching a guy’s nose for speaking ill about Neil in her high school days..She smiled little and slept after watching her lilies..

Sam was in the garden to catch the first rays fall on her garden… Neil came behind sipping his coffee surprising her.. Neil isn’t a morning person like Sam. Within minutes Sunlight covered the garden..
“You should see those Marigold now ” he walk past her and saw those flowers.. They heard a thud sound behind and saw Rubina standing near the stairs of her terrace.,Sam’s flat expressions made Rubina smirk.. Neil saw both and pulled her back.
“Now don’t give the same face” he said annoyingly. Rubina gave a mock pity gesture which rubbed off sam badly.
” Neil.. Propose me” Sam said
“What? …come inside.. “Neil replied back
Sam’s gaze shifted to Neil from Rubina.. “You claim to love me.. propose me now” she said in clear raised voice.
Neil rubbed his forehead and sighed., A Slap! he stood shocked. Sam stood glaring him. Neil held his cheek before he knelt to propose.
“I love you Sam.. Will u marry me?” he proposed more like a Robot ,blinked when she smiled cheerfully and cooed him.. “Tats so sweet”
Neil starred her.. “Now Tell this to everyone in this world” Sam said with a proud filled voice to Rubina who stood frozen watching Neil slapped..
“She needs to say one more thing Sammy..” he said with his gaze on her face, tucking her hair strand behind her left ear., which made Sam a little alert, but before she could react he captured her lips with his.
The mesmerizing fragrance of Winter jasmine mixed with the morning breeze favoring their love.,they stood relishing their moment of first Kiss.
Again a thud sound., the realization about the sound, made both laugh with their lips locked.. their palms turning responsive, held each other’s shoulders to hold their mirth and next second Neil threw his head back laughing heartily..
