Born on December 6, 1947, in Sarhali Kalan, East Punjab, Praveen Kumar Sobti made waves in the world of sports long before he ventured into acting. His life was a testament to true championship, both on and off the field.
While serving as a soldier with the Border Security Force (BSF), Praveen began training in discus and hammer throw, driven by the encouragement of his officers in the 1960s. This support propelled him to compete at international events, marking the beginning of a remarkable sports career.
Praveen represented India in the 1966 Asian Games, where he clinched a gold medal in discus throw and a bronze medal in hammer throw. He further showcased his talent by participating in two Olympic Games— the 1968 Mexico Olympics and the 1972 Munich Olympics.
In the 1970 Asian Games, Sobti secured another gold medal, followed by a silver medal in the 1974 Asian Games. His prowess was further highlighted in the 1966 Commonwealth Games, where he won a silver medal in hammer throw. For his outstanding contributions to Indian sports, he was honored with the Arjuna Award, India’s second-highest sporting honor, in 1967.
Praveen’s towering physique and commanding presence eventually led him to the silver screen, where he debuted as a large henchman in the Jeetendra-starrer film Raksha. This role marked the beginning of his showbiz journey, leading to numerous film and television appearances. However, it was his role in BR Chopra’s Mahabharat that truly immortalized him, as he brought the mighty Pandava Bhim to life with unmatched intensity.
Praveen Kumar Sobti passed away from a heart attack on February 7, 2022, at the age of 74. Although he is no longer with us, his legacy remains a powerful source of inspiration for generations to come, embodying the spirit of perseverance, strength, and dedication.
