EPISODE 16: LUCKY
ISHU’S PERSPECTIVE

“What did I get myself into? Ugh! Tough luck!” I sighed inwardly while sneaking looks at Om who was shooting daggers at me. Honestly, angry Om was scary. Watching his gentle features distorting into a pained and furious mask was frightening for me. I had seen him get angry at Tej uncle once or twice but I had never imagined how deeply rooted his hatred was for him to not care about who it was directed at. Experiencing it firsthand didn’t make it any better.
“You know, it’s kind of childish of you to leave home for such little things”, I snapped all of a sudden. He was shocked at that, obviously. But even more than shock, I saw hurt and anger stored within. That brought me up short and I backed down as quickly as I had said it. But the damage was done.
“It seems childish to you?” he asked in a low voice. I meekly shook my head in response, desperately trying to keep myself from trembling all over. “This is not a child’s play, and I’m not a toy! He’s trying to use my life for his profit! The man who never cared for me or my mother or my entire family; who put me through hell for the major part of my life; you think staying with him is an easy task? Every day I try to endure it thinking of my brothers, my mother and my Dadi. But I just can’t do it now!” he shouted.
I involuntarily flinched at his high volume, taken aback with his sudden outrage. He noticed that and took a deep breath to steady himself. I pursed my lips and waited while searching my head for words. I didn’t find any.

“It’s just that I want to stay away for a day or two. To recharge myself, you know? Before I see that man again, I just want to make sure my brain is in the right place. If you are uncomfortable, I can stay somewhere else.” He looked up at me from under his long lashes and I forgot how to breathe. Swallowing the lump in my throat, I carefully spoke, “Om, I don’t have a problem with you staying here for a few days. You can stay here forever if you want. But I know they need you there more. And no matter what your differences are or what kind of a person he is to the world, he’s still your father and he cares for you.” The words came out in a rush before I knew it. Realizing what I had just blurted out, I hurried to clear it up. Om’s astonished look made me hesitate and stumble over the words in my mouth, but I managed to get it out.

“I know that because when I was in the hospital after dealing with your attacker, he told me you are his life. He thanked me for saving his life by saving you. If that’s not fatherly love, then what is?” I ended with a soft note and Om lowered his head on his folded palms digesting this little detail. I watched him quietly as his hair fell on either side of his face and formed a kind of curtain around him, separating him from the world, making him unique.
After some time, the doorbell rang and I jumped to open it, saving myself from swooning over a sad person! I came face to face with an evidently worried and angry ShivRu. What was with these ‘angry Oberoi men’? They fired me with a volley of questions about their brother before I could even get a word out. I was prepared to shout an order for silence when they stopped all of a sudden. I followed their sight and saw Om standing in front. He motioned for them to take a seat and they followed silently. I stood there for a second more, wondering if I should give them some privacy. I didn’t want to feel this way for any of them, but I always ended up feeling these waves of affection for them!
Knowing very well that if my suspicions are confirmed, I would be the one causing him most pain, I still couldn’t keep my distance from Om. His words from before rang in my ears again as my feet moved on their own.

OM’S PERSPECTIVE

Being stubborn at times was good for health. This was my lesson for the day.
Shivaay and Rudra were still trying to locate the exact reason for my actions, but I kept my lips sealed. The only thing they needed to know was that I wasn’t going back right now. They didn’t give in and I was in no mood to accept their request either. We had reached an inflexible impasse.
Ishu walked back in with slow steps as if deliberating whether to come inside or not. It was so ironic, since we were the ones imposing! She came to a stop directly across me, facing the others. Taking a long dragged breath, she began, “Shivaay, it is okay if he wants to stay away for a few days. There’s another room, so he can sleep there…” she trailed off with her finger still pointing to the other room.
Shivaay simply nodded at her and then turned back to me with a pleading face. “At least tell me what happened so that I can take care of it for you.” His words made sense, but I knew Shivaay will take it upon himself to make everything alright. Thinking for a moment, I replied, “I’ll tell you later, Shivaay.”
Rudra seemed disturbed at that and he said, “O, please. Don’t do this again. We had promised to tell each other our problems. So just tell us, so that we can find the solution together.” Such mature words from our kid brother! I looked at Shivaay and we shared a look of awe, pride and happiness for a second. Then I looked at Rudra and said, “All this doesn’t suit you. You should stick to cracking poor jokes and worse poetry!”

He theatrically cried that no one understands his feelings and we laughed at that; we, that is Shivaay and I. Ishu was lost in her own world as she stood there deep in thought. Thinking back to her words, “They need you there more”, I decided to tell them anyways. After all, in the end the truth is the best option. Or is it?

Sorry guys, I know I’m late. But I had a terrible headache, so I couldn’t type. Also, I know this one is too small, but you’ll have to make do this time.
