Sanchi’s phone kept on ringing. She looked at Pragya.
“What should I do, what should I do, tell me?” Sanchi started panicking.
“Stop panicking,” Pragya said, “take deep breaths.”
Priya inhaled deeply and let the air out.
“Good,” Pragya said, “now pick up the phone and tell him ‘Pragya is not interested in you’ ok?”
“Ok,ok,” Pragya said.
She picked up the phone, ” hi veer.”
“Hello,” came the voice from the other side.
Sanchi took a deep breath.
“Did you talk to Pragya?” Veer sounded desperate.
“Yes,” Sanchi answered.
Veer waited for Sanchi to continue.
“And,” Sanchi continued, “And, she….she.”
“She what?” Veer asked.
Pragya gestured Sanchi to go ahead.
“And…….. she will meet you tomorrow,” Sanchi said quickly and kept the phone.
“Whaaaat!!” Pragya shouted.
“I couldn’t say it,” Sanchi explained.
“Why?”
“U don’t know Why.”
“I am not going to meet him tomorrow.”
“What no no no no no you can’t ditch me.” Sanchi followed Pragya as she moved about the whole room.
“You DITCHED me. You were supposed to say I don’t like him,” Pragya sat on a chair.Sanchi stood beside her.
“Well I couldn’t, can’t to U tell him for yourself?” Sanchi followed Pragya as she got up and walked towards to the book shelf.
“Fine,” Pragya turned, “tell him to meet me tomorrow on the terrace,” Pragya made an arrogant face.
“Thank you, thank you, thank you. I love you,” Sanchi hugged Pragya. Pragya pushed her away. Sanchi hugged her again, this time Pragya hugged her back
“But I still hate you,” Pragya said.
“I know,” Sanchi smiled.
Next day in school
Sanchi fidgeted in her seat as she waited for Pragya and Veer to return. She had told Veer to meet Pragya at the terrace when they met before school. Veer had sounded so excited. Sanchi just couldn’t tell him the truth.
Sanchi started thinking of ways how to cheer Veer up.
Pragya entered the class interrupting Sanchi’s thought of making Veer a cake.
“Hey,” Sanchi said,” what happened? What did you say? How did he react? What did he say? Tell me.”
” Why don’t you ask him yourself, ” Pragya made a straight face.
Pragya took her seat. It was clear Pragya was still acting to be angry with Sanchi but Sanchi knew it was just acting. She needed to talk to Veer now.
Veer walked into the class. He didn’t even glance at Sanchi or Pragya’s direction. The teacher entered just then. Sanchi couldn’t talk to him.
After school Veer walked to the middle of the playground where Sanchi stood. Sanchi had sent a junior stuent to call him there. He had a straight face. It was hard to read his expression. Priya didn’t know how to react so she constantly went from smile to concerned and back to smile.
“Hi veer, ” Sanchi said.
“Why did you call me, ” Veer was irritated.
“I just wanted to talk. ”
“What is there left to talk. ”
“Don’t say like that. It’s okay it didn’t work out between you and Pragya but we–”
“We? There is no ‘we’ Sanchi. ”
“Fine. YOU and I can still be friends. ”
“Friends? ” Veer made a face like someone has told him Earth is a cube.
“Yes, why? ” Sanchi was confused.
“For what would we be friends? ”
“For what? We don’t need a reason to be friends. ”
“I do and one more thing. We are not friends. ” Veer turned and started returning. Sanchi ran and blocks Veer’s path.
“You can’t go like that. ”
” of course I can move. ”
“No. Look I know you are angry but–”
“Angry? Yes I’m angry but I am not doing all these because I am angry. I am doing this because I am done with you. I wasted six months on you and got nothing in return. ”
“Return? ”
” Are you really this stupid? I made you my friend so that I could get Pragya but you….. couldn’t even make her like me. ”
“Its not my fault that she doesn’t like you, ” Sanchi was broken. Veer had been using her.
“You tell you are her best friend but you couldn’t even make her like a guy. ”
“For God’s sake Veer I am her best friend. I am not responsible for her love life, ” Sanchi was agitated.
“Yeah, but that doesn’t work with my plan. You know, all this months I tolerated you just to with the hope of seeing Pragya on my bed–”
Slap!!!!!!
“HOW DARE YOU? ” Sanchi’s face was red. Her eyes glowed with fire. Her jawline tightened. She made a fist and started shaking.
Veer was scared and confused. Ha had never seen this side of Sanchi.
“How dare you talk about my friend like that, ” Sanchi pointed her fingers at Veer, ” next time if you even do as much as blink in Pragya’s direction I am gonna snatch your eyes off, understand? ” Sanchi threatened.
“I.. I, “Veer stammered.
“Now get lost before I break your legs and your disgusting nose. ”
Veer started running. Sanchi was still shaking. She relaxed slowly. She couldn’t believe what she had just done. But she was pleased. She will not take any shit about her friends.
Yes, she was sad. Yes, she was hurt but not because Veer used her but because she fell for such a guy. The scene slowly black end as evening descends. Sanchi keeps standing there.
Five years later
Two gorgeous ladies walked in through the gates of Savitri Devi College and Hospital. They wore subglasses, four inch heels and had suitcase in hand.
