(Present)

Radhika saw Arjun had read her message. She waited for his reply. However his status remained at *online*. He was probably trying to understand the meaning of her words. Tired of waiting, she got up and stretched her body. It had been a tough day at college for her. She recollected how she had cried in front of her friend thinking of Arjun’s behaviour in the past few weeks. Radhika wondered if her friend had understood that the reason she gave for her sadness was a fabrication. The truth was, she didn’t want to appear weak to the girl. She had told her that there were some family problems going on at her home. Which college student likes to admit she’s crying for a boy? Still, her friend’s reaction told her that the former hadn’t believed her. Never mind.

Arjun was trying to decipher the meaning of Radhika’s message when he realised it referred to his habit of going offline suddenly in the middle of their chat. He replied, ” Yeah abrupt endings are inevitable coz of my mom. You know na?”

Radhika saw his msg and instantly loathed him. Why did he have to take everything so non-seriously? It wasn’t as if she didn’t know the rule. Arjun could go offline anytime as his mom liked to drop in suddenly and check his phone. Which meant that she could never message him unless he allowed her to, because if his mom would’ve known he was talking to a girl, she would’ve taken his phone away. So Radhika had to keep waiting. And waiting. Sometimes she even had to delete the messages she had typed because Arjun would msg her *no reply* all of a sudden.

But that wasn’t what she had meant this time. True, it was frustrating sometimes. But having strict parents herself, she understood. So she never complained. But now, Arjun and his nonchalance was getting to her. What she had meant was far more serious than what he had taken it to be. She had never meant that she wanted to end everything, for once and for all. She wanted to end their friendship. She wanted to end all sort of contact between them. It would be hard. But she had to. Better to end it early. For she had just realised something that would ruin everything forever.

(Past)

Around a month after their first conversation…

“Hey, ssup?” Arjun asked Radhika as soon as he saw her online. It had become a daily ritual for them now to talk to each other. She’d keep talking about her college and friends, something which helped distract Arjun from his monotonous life. She was like one of the very few people he could talk to nowadays.

“Nothing dude. Got some dumb boring projects to make. Talk to you later?”

“Sure. Take care. :’)”

“Yeah. You too. Bbye!”

“Bye!”

Damn. So even Radhika wasn’t free now. He couldn’t blame her. Being a busy law student, she couldn’t keep talking to him right? She had already mentioned her hefty projects sometime back. Still, Arjun felt lonely. He was used to this feeling now. He was sure he was a depression patient. He was showing all the signs and symptoms of one, at least.

Samaira too hadn’t been able to talk to him for the past one week. She was stressed about her preparation for the entrances. Arjun seriously hoped she would make it to a good law college. Ha! Funny. Both the girls in his life right now were related to law in some way or the other.
