Late night ramblings of a solitary creature (chapter 1)

*TEN MONTHS AGO*

‘Oh lol that was funny,’ Arjun thought. He was going through his Facebook newsfeed when he saw a post saying, “What if you were to get married at the age represented by the last two digits of your phone number?” Without even looking at who had shared the post, he commented, “89!”

At the same instant, a girl sitting far away received a notification. *Arjun Mehra commented on your status.* ‘Wait. What? Who’s this?,’ Radhika thought. She instantly clicked on his ID and saw that he was an ex-schoolmate of hers. She had talked to him only once or twice during social events at school. She still remembered his firm handshake, though. Funny, she thought. She had never really known his name until now. She wondered when she had accepted his friend request. Or maybe she herself sent him one. It didn’t matter anyway now.

’89? SERIOUSLY? Ouch!’ Radhika was amused. Nevertheless she replied to his comment saying, “18 in my case!!! Hahaha!!!”

Within seconds, she had received another notification. “Wow! So when will i get the good news? :P”, was the reply.

“Soonnnnnn!! I’m still 17 actually!! Yours is too late though!!! You’ll be an oldie by then! :P”

“Oh hahahahaha. Ab kya kar skte hai XD.”
(What can we do now XD)

“Lol RIGHT ?. I pity you!”

As Radhika waited for another notification, she saw that she had received a personal message. Checking it, she saw that Arjun had messaged her personally. ‘Thank God, so even he found chatting publicly like that dumb. Nice guy I suppose.’

After exchanging a few pleasantries, they started discussing colleges and boards marks and all the regular stuff grown up teenagers usually do. By the time they wished each other good night, Radhika had a nice feeling about it. Arjun had been humorously talkative. She had rarely found a guy who’d go on talking for hours, and that too so pleasantly. She was sure she had found a good friend for now, at least. She hoped he would remember to talk afterwards too.

Meanwhile, Arjun was smiling at himself. He had found a new friend and he was sure the girl was nice. Funny how they had never really talked at school! He hadn’t even remembered her except the fact that she had very short hair, almost nearing a boy cut, and that she had joined school in mid-tenth, and that she had become instantly famous as she was perhaps the only NTSE scholar the school had ever had. What was funnier was the fact that he hadn’t even known that he once shook hands with her at the freshers party they had thrown for the juniors! However, Radhika seemed to remember that, due to the sheer fact that his grip on her hand had been so strong that she almost felt her fingers would crumble into pieces ?. Though he remembered none of it, he was pretty sure she was telling the truth. After all, he did have a strong grip, and in any case, she was supposed to be very intelligent and thus have an excellent memory. ‘Lol, how my mind’s wandering!’

Still, he felt happy. Relieved would be a better word though. As he switched off the lights and pulled the blankets over himself, two thoughts still remained in his head. Firstly, he wondered what Samaira was doing, and when would he finally get to talk to her again. It had been two days since they had last talked. And secondly, he wondered if he’d have to tell Radhika the truth about himself. You see, he had lied to her. He hadn’t wanted to put up a bad impression in their first conversation itself. She, being the intelligent and super achiever girl she was, would never even talk to him had she known his reality. Putting his troubled thoughts to rest, he dozed off.

Precap : Ardhika’s growing friendship, Samaira and Arjun in a relationship.
