The Mehendi !!

Karthik woke up late that day. He had all the tiredness from yesterday, making his head ache. He moved down stairs and heard keerti chachi talking on her phone.

“Yes, Mrs. Singhania. Ishana, Soumya and I will be there shortly for the mehendi function.” Keerti said and hung up the phone.

“Only Ishana, Soumya and you. What about us ?!! Naksh chacha, Om, Rudra and me ?!!” Karthik asked taken aback that he wasn’t included in his own wedding.

“What work do you boys have in the mehendi function ?!! You will stay at home only. Watch TV, eat and sleep.” Keerti chachi said and laughed at his expression.

“But that’s not fair !!! You all will do so much masti and we should just sit here and watch TV.” He complained.

“Whatever !! You are not coming and that’s final.” Keerti chachi said and moved towards the kitchen to prepare breakfast.

Karthik stood there thinking about something and then removed his phone from his track pant’s pocket. He dialed “Wifey !!”.

“Good afternoon Mr. Husband. I just heard that we wont be meeting today as you are not supposed to attend the mehendi function.” He heard her cheerful voice and a smile crept on his face.

“Don’t worry, I am going to be present in the Mehendi today !!” He said into the phone.

“You can try all you want !! No one is going to let you inside.” She answered chuckling on the other side.

“Lets wait and watch, Babe. I will be there.” He said more confidently.

“Fine, Let’s see if you manage to come in.” she replied.

“If I do manage to come in, what would I get as a return gift ?!!” he asked her.

“What do you want ?!!” she asked him.

“That I will tell you after I meet you there in the Mehendi !!!” he said and hung up the call before she could respond.

“Welcome Keerti jii !! Come inside. Please sit down and have some refreshments.Juice, Snacks, whatever you like.” Naira’s mom greeted them as they entered the singhania mansion.

“First you tell us where our Naira is, aunty.” Ishana said scanning the room for the bride.

“She is still getting ready. She should be down shortly.” Naira’s mom said.

“I can’t wait. I am so excited. I feel like dancing.” Soumya quipped in.

Just then Naira descended the stairs and everyone turned to look at her. She was looking gorgeous in a pink and turquoise green ghagra with a pink veil on her head. She had accentuated her look with a pearl necklace, earrings and maang tikka.

She came and stood in front of keerti chachi, folded her hands and bent down to take her blessings.

“You’re looking so beautiful !!” Keerti chachi said and hugged her.

“Let’s start the ceremony.” Anika said.

Naira sat down on a stool while all the girls surrounded her. The professional mehendi artist started drawing mehendi patterns on her hands.

“Let’s have some fun now. All of us will dance.” Anika said and pulled Ishana and Soumya and they began dancing.

“Mehendi Rachan lagee hataa mei bande ne naam di,

“Mehendi rachegi gehri, pyar gehra hoga,
Laal khushal rang sang tere hoga,
Mehendi rachi hai surangi banna thare naam rii,
Aayi shubh ghadi dekho mhare aangan aaj rii.”

Just then a lady covering her face with a veil entered the house. She wore a simple green coloured cotton saree and had covered her face completely. She came and stood in front of Naira who was busy in getting the mehendi applied.

“Naira, It’s so nice to meet you. I’m your mother’s old friend. Congratulations on your wedding.” The lady said.

“Thank you aunty. Please sit down. I will call mumma.” Naira said.

“ No No, you sit here. I will meet your mumma myself.” Saying so the lady got up and tried to walk when the ‘Pallu’ of her saree got under her feet and her veil slid down from the head.

Everyone looked at Karthik who stood there dressed in a saree and burst out laughing.

“Weren’t you told not to come here today. What are you doing here ?!! Go now.” Anika said, hands on her hips and standing infront of him.

“Yes, Karthik. It’s a ladies function. Go now.” Ishana said.

“Come on girls, Push him out.” Soumya said and winked at Karthik. While he stood there like a statue not knowing what to do next.

Anika, Ishana and Soumya started pushing him outside the door while all the ladies present there laughed.

“Maybe we should just allow him to come in.” Naira’s mom said and Karthik looked at her thankfully.

Just then four men entered through the front door and smiled at the stunned ladies.

“Come on, let us stay.” Shivay said.

“Yeah, we are bored sitting at home and watching tv.” Rudra complained.

“We will not disturb your function, but please let us stay.” Om said.

“Please ladies.” Naksh pleaded.

Finally the ladies agreed to their request and everyone sat down. Karthik sat next to Naira as the ladies finished with her mehendi.

“Didn’t I tell you, That I will surely come to your mehendi.” He said softly.

“You did and you showed as well. But your plan was a flop show.” She said and chuckled lightly.

He rolled his eyes and they laughed.

“Karthik, you have to search for your initial in Naira’s mehendi. IF you find it, than its believed that both of you are meant to be together.” Naira’s mom said to her son in law.

“Mom, I will surely find it.” He said.

“Karthik but I ….” Naira started to say something but he cut her off.

“Wait, I will find it.” He said.

“But….” She started to say again but was silenced by him.

“Naira, I need silence to concentrate. Be quiet.” He said and started searching her hand.

She rolled her eyes as he inspected her hands. The design was exquisite with a small circle left blank in the middle of her right palm. After 15 minutes, he looked up crestfallen.

“I can’t find it !!” he explained helpless.

“Obviously.” She concluded.

“Obviously ?!!” he asked looking shocked at her.

“I’ve been trying to tell you from the start, but you were not listening. You can’t find your initial because I haven’t written it yet.” She said.

“You haven’t written it ?!!” he asked her totally confused.

“ I knew that you would come here no matter what. So I left the space empty since I wanted you to write it.” She said innocently.

Karthik’s heart leapt with pleasure at her words. He felt like jumping up and down and kissing her deeply but instead reached for the mehendi cone and wrote a ‘K’ in the blank circle. After he was done he kept the cone on the side table and pecked her on her cheeks, making her go all red in the face.

“Thank you.” She said still recovering from her blush.

“Thanks ?!! Why ?!!” he asked her.

“For making my mehendi so special.” She said.

“Well I intend to make your whole life special so think of a better return gift than the dry thanks that you are giving me right now.” He said and smirked at her.
