MANIK ~

I felt betrayed. Seeing her with Maddy broke me from the inside. I still couldn’t get my answers, as to why, did she leave me without an explanation. Nandini was stubborn and feisty; if she had sworn not to tell, she was not going to tell.

I wish, I could hate. In the past two years, I tried to do so. I tried to bury my feelings for her. But I couldn’t. It was just too hard. I didn’t feel like sticking up with the lads at the party, the rest of the night. I had to head home; get away from everything.

As I unlocked my car, Madhyam came running after me. “Hey, Manik? Where are you heading to?” He asked.

“Uh, I gotta leave. Something important came up.” I replied.

“Dude, we’ve just met! Stay another hour or something, na.”

“I’m really sorry, Maddy. I’ve to go. But, you’re in Delhi till next month, right? I’m sure we can catch up again soon.” I said.

He rolled his eyes. “Yeah. Well, next month starts next week. Anyway, I’ll see you soon, yeah?” I nodded. Just then, Nandini walked down the stairs; obviously clueless about me.

“Hey, babe! Where are you going?” Maddy asked. Nandini looked at me first, and then, at Maddy. Her eyes were swollen. She had been crying; and Maddy was probably too drunk to notice that.

“Uh, I’m going home. Its pretty late.” She said.

“Its eleven.” Maddy stated and looked at her absurdly.

“Yeah, but mom’s home. She’s probably worried about me. I’m sorry, Maddy. I gotta go.” She said.

Maddy seemed to understand and nodded. “Well, okay then! How are you going to go? I can drop you, actually. ” He suggested.

“No. You’re drunk. You shouldn’t be driving. I’ll manage. Don’t worry.”

Maddy sighed and looked around, thinking of a solution, when his eyes landed on me. “Manik’s leaving as well. Can you drop her off, bud?” He asked.

Personal issues aside, I didn’t have a problem dropping her off. I would have done that for any girl. But before I could have opinionated, Nandini spoke.

“No. I can go on my own, please.” She said.

“Its not safe, baby. Either I am driving you home, or he is. But you can’t go alone.” Maddy said.

She sighed, finally giving up. “Alright, I’ll go with him. You just, stay here and have fun, okay?”

Maddy smiled and pulled her into his arms. She pulled back quickly and awkwardly. The sight was too painful for me. I wanted to be the one to hold her. I wondered what this guy has that I don’t. Soon, Maddy bid his adieu and went back inside.

“Let’s go.” I said. But Nandini stood in her spot, not willing to get in the car.

“No. I’m not coming with you. I can manage.” She spat.

I rolled my eyes at her stubbornness. This was one thing about her, that hadn’t changed in the past two years. “Yes, you are.” I said.

“Listen, I’m mature enough to handle myself. I can go alone. Hell, I will go alone.” She argued.

This was was really hitting the nerve. I had angered her once, and I couldn’t afford doing that again. “Listen, just, don’t get personal here, okay? Put that attitude aside, and get in.” I said, as calmly as I could.

“Who are you to tell me that?” She asked.

“Someone, who knows you better than you know yourself. So I know, that you can’t make it on your own.” I replied.

“I can, and I will. Just go, Manik. Leave me alone.” She said. Again, we were fighting. The both of us being stubborn and pretty much short tempered, one of us had to stay calm in such situations. I, was always the one.

“Nandini, can you please understand? Its not safe around here at night. Listen to me -” I tried convincing her, but she cut me off in the middle.

“No, thank you, and goodbye.” She said, sternly.

Before I could go on, she had already left me alone. I closed my eyes, and heaved a sigh. She was gone, and I know, she never knew how to make it on her own. But she never showed weakness for letting go.

I was worried about her. She wasn’t going to be safe, and I had to do something.

Oh God, how do I even get out of this mess?
