Swara was standing shocked and numb. A girl was standing beside her bestfriend and was claiming to be his girlfriend! And her bestfriendwas also accepting it… And she did not know anything about it!!! This was just impossible…
Swara (frowning) – Girlfriend?Means?
Sanskar was about to say something when Raginiinterrupted…
Ragini (sarcastically) – Girlfriend means Girlfriend babes!!! Like you are Laksh’s girlfriend….
Swara’s eyes widened!!! Her best friend confided such an importantinformation from her, this was not all done… She immediately draggedSanskar merely murmuring an “Excuse Me” to Ragini… Ragini was a bit shocked by her suddenbehaviour, but she didn’t give a damn about it! All she cared was how could Sanskar hid about Raginifrom her…
Swara (shouting amidst loud music) – Yeh kya hai Sanskar???Whats this?
Sanskar (holding his ears) – Whatwhat!!!
Swara holding his arms tightly pointing towards Ragini…
Swara – Abhi bataati hoon whatwhat? Whats is she doing with you?
Sanskar – Arre she is my boss’s daughter… Ragini…
Swara ( a bit surprised) – Boss kidaughter hai to yahan kya kar rahihai? And what was she telling girlfriend and all…
Sanskar (slowly) – Well it’s the truth… She is my girlfriend!
Swara’s eyes widened, now her friend was also admitting it…
Swara (shouting) – And you are telling me now???
Before Sanskar could answer anything Laksh had interrupted. He had reached there finally getting time from his friends.
Laksh – Hey Bro… You here?
Sanskar (faked a smile) – Happy Birthday Man! Well I am here with…
Ragini (who had already come) – He is with me…
Laksh (surprised) – Whoo whoo… Surprises after surprises!! What are you doing here Ragini?
(Remember Ragini was therebatchmate, so Laksh also knew her)
Ragini (smiling) – Well am with my boyfriend..
She again slid her arms underSanskar’s arm (chipku kahinki!Huhh!) … Swara was looking atSanskar as if she will destroy him with her eyes!!! Sanskar was looking at her with puppy eyes and he was sure that she was not at all in a mood to forgive… Afterall hiding such an important piece of information from best friend was no less than a hideous crime! Lakshwrapped his arms around Swarasmiled looking at her…
Laksh – Wow! That’s great… SeeSwara your bestfriend is now committed! Isnt it a reason to celebrate?
Swara looked at Laksh and smiledfakely…
Swara – Ya I know Laksh, but I have to reach home.. It’s already late! Mom will be worrying….
Laksh – Oh darling!!! Just one day…
He tightened his grip around her waist…He came closer to her face,Swara felt a bit uncomfortable as he was drunk. Sanskar was looking at them strangely fisting his hands unknowingly… He was seeing a very different Laksh today which was forcing him to think twice that whether he was correct to helpSwara in being with him… Heshuddered his thought thinking thatSwara loved him…
Laksh – Cmon gyz lets have dinner together…
Ragini nodded happily. Swaralooked at Sanskar who was in deep down thoughts. All headed towards a corner… Swara was about to sit beside Sanskar, it was her habit from childhood. Whenever she would go out with him, they would sit together. Today despite of the fact that she was with Laksh, she unknowingly went on to her place beside Sanskar. Suddenly Raginiinterrupted…
Ragini – Well I guess Swara, your place is right there behind Laksh…
Swara turned around and looked at her. She was looking at herstrangely, she looked back atSanskar who was not uttering a word. She felt very strange, her friend had changed this much, she had not noticed in all these while!
She silently went and sat besideLaksh. Laksh held her hand and kissed on it. This was his bad habit which Swara disliked the most. She hated PDA! But he wont listen… She smiled with difficulty and looked atRagini who was keeping her head on Sanskar’s shoulder and smiling and whispering something. Sanskaralso seemed to be engaged with her without paying attention to her…
She cleared her throat breaking everyone’s attention…
Swara – Ahmm ahmm!
Sanskar looked at her strangely…
Swara – Well lets order! Already I am late…
Laksh nodded and took the menu card and started ordering for him and Swara whereas Ragini did the same for hers and Sanskar.Sanskar felt he was seeing a different Swara today, She was not the usual bubbly chirpy self but have become a lot more reserved.Swara was thinking about something else! Whenever she would go out with Sanskar both would order each other’s favorite dishes but here the scenario was entirely different… She rested her face on her palms and kept her elbow on the table thinking about all this, meanwhile the food came…
All were helping themselves. To her surprise Ragini was feedingSanskar, no wait! That was her place… From childhood it was she who used to play with Sanskar, throw water at him, do nakhraswhich he would manage and now who was this new girl who suddenly came and was sitting beside him.
It was really strange that even though it was her so called boyfriend’s birthday her mind was occupied with Sanskar! Suddenly she felt an immense urge to kick that Ragini, she did not waste a moment and gave a huge kick but unfortunately her best friend became the victim of her anger….
Sanskar started coughing vigorously and looked up at Swarashocked… Swara sprang up cut her tongue! Oh God! What did she do!! She quickly took the glass of water and was about to hold it in front ofSanskar but before that Ragini had already done that…
Ragini (caringly) – Oh baby! Be careful…
Swara sat down with a thump and made a very funny expression…“Baby!!!” – she muttered under breath… “ Mera gabru jawaan dostisse baby lagta hai!!! Huhh…” – she said comically yet angrily in mind looking at both of them….
Well this was just the beginning… A lot more was to come!
[Next Day]
[Morning]
It was a Sunday and both Swara’scollege and Sanskar’s office was off. Swara was sitting in the drawing room watching TV. Actually her mind was preoccupied with last night’s events and she was still thinking of how that Ragini was sticking to Sanskar…
Swara (in mind) – Arre why am I feeling so bad? Its his life…let him do whatever he wants to! If he likes that Ragini then I should be happyna… Afterall he is my bestie!
Next moment, she again thought – “No but he is Sanskar, my Sanskar! How can he hide such an important matter to me… And that Ragini, god knows why I don’t like her… She is not good for him!” – she kept murmuring when a voice broke her attention!
She looked behind and smiled. Annapurna Maheshwari, her Annapurna aunty and Sanskar’smother was looking at her smiling. She was the one person whomSwara loved like anything. She got up and hugged her…
Swara (smiling) – Aunty aap!
AP (smiling) – Yes, I thought it was Sunday so thought to meet my darling daughter…
Swara’s eyes lit in happiness as AP touched her cheeks with affection.Swara’s mother Sharmistha was standing at a corner
Shomi – Arre waah Annapurna ji, so good to see you… Sanskar nahinaya?
“Ofcourse Aunty how cant I? You called your son and see he is here…” – Sanskar entered smiling. AP andShomi smiled.. He came and took blessings. Swara looked at Sanskarangrily, he understood madam was still angry…
[Half an hour later]
Swara was sitting on the floor with folded knees and closed eyes and AP was massaging her hair with oil… Whereaes, Sanskar was sitting beside Shomi munching on pakoraswhich Shomi made for him… Oh God, he could die for those!!!
Sanskar (chewing) – Believe me aunty these are the best pakoras in the world…
Shomi smiled and caressed her hairs…
Shomi – Hae mera bachha… I know you love those!!!
AP (looking at them) – Sharmishtha, bacha bacha nahin raha… He is grown up!!! Ask him where was he last night… Nowdays mister is coming late and not even saying anything…
Swara giggled with her eyes still closed…
Shomi – Tu bara has rahi hai?? Where were you??? Arre Annapurnaji what are you saying? Even she was late yesterday…! Bdw Sanskarwhere did you go?
Sanskar (slowly) – Well we were together at a friend’s birthday party…
Swara looked at him… Both mothers were surprised…
AP – Tum dono saath theey?
Swara looked up at APs face and nodded, AP smiled at Sharmishtha… Both knew what was going on and what was about to happen but unluckily Swasan themselves were unknown to their feelings…
[2days later]
[At Hotel Dreamland]
Ragini had thrown a party to celebrate her’s and Sanskar’s first month anniversary. Only close friends were invited and Swara was also invited along with Laksh. She was surprised to know that it had been one month since they were dating and she did not have a clue about it… She did not want to come but there was some unknown feeling that attracted her…
She entered the hall looking ethereal in a blue croptop and black long skirt. All were staring at her as she was the prettiest girl around.Laksh entered wrapping his arms around her waist.
She was looking at the hall, this was the same hall where she had proposed Laksh, but she was not thinking this, her mind was unknowingly thinking about the tired Sanskar who was standing that day to make sure each of the arrangements were perfect for her special day… How he smiled seeing her and opened her hair…
Now that Sanskar was standing beside Ragini looking handsome in a white suit. He had his hands in pocket and was smiling. Suddenly his eyes fell on Swara and he froze! She was the most beautiful girl he had ever seen, so natural yet so beautiful!!! He could not move his eyes from her and was looking at her from top to bottom, Ragininudged him to break his attention…
Ragini (smiling and looking at him) – Well I met Sanskar at our office for the first time. I was in Dad’s cabin going through some files when he entered, I could sense he was different. Then I saw his dedication towards work as we worked together for a project!!! And see I fell head over heels in love with him… Well you can say I fell for him the first day I saw him…
She was narrating her story to her friends staring at Sanskar, who had a dull smile on face. Swara was also listening to the story grippingLaksh’s arm tight as she described each and every incident of their one month courtship, which included surprises from her side, dates which happened by her initiative, it was more like a one-sided affair.
Sanskar could sense the discomfort in Swara’s eyes, even he was uncomfortable god knows why…
Swara (finally interrupting) – Basbas, some things are better kept private! Understood Miss Ragini…
Ragini looked at her sarcastically but she didn’t care. She just could not listen to what all surprises she gave to her best friend!!! Who was she to give him surprises? Only she had that right!!! And she would not give that right to anyone…
[Sometimes later]
It was dance time. Ragini was about to hold Sanskar’s arm when suddenly Swara spilled her drink on her expensive offshoulder pink gown…
Swara – Oh God!!! I am so so sorryRagini… Really I didn’t know…
Ragini was about to burst out but she looked at Sanskar. She was well aware of the fact that Swarawas Sanskar’s best friend and he would not tolerate any ill behaviourtowards her… So to maintain a good impression on him, she had to forcibly be good to Swara…
Ragini – No problem Swara, I will wash it… You gyz carry on…
She went towards the washroom.Swara came closer to Sanskar,Laksh was busy with his friends as usual.
Swara (smiled) – Dance?
She forwarded her hand. Sanskardid not know how to react and surprise surprise Swasan were on the dance floor.
Swara was looking at Sanskar. He was avoiding eye contact with her and looking down as they swayed to the beats of the song.
Swara – Achha now you cant even look at me… I think you are missingRagini.. Madam had arranged so many dates and surprises for youafterall…
Sanskar was a bit taken aback.. He turned Swara one round and again she faced him resting his hand on his shoulder…
Sanskar (surprised) – What are you saying yaar?
Swara (sarcastically) – Ofcourse! You are missing her… Ab toh best friend ki company bhi achhi nahinlagti..
This time Sanskar was very veryangry. He pulled her tight by waist and they came closer. Swara was feeling very very different as their bodies touched… She never felt so comfortable when Laksh would publicly display his affection, this was different and she liked it as a matter-of-fact. The music fastened and Sanskar turned her round and round fast!!! He pulled her as her back crushed with his hard toned chest! He kept his lips on her ears as Swara closed her eyes…
Sanskar (whispering) – What do you mean Swara? Saaf saaf bolo…
Swara (hissed) – Saaf saaf… Okk, then listen Mr.Maheshwari… Baatyeh hai ki, you got into a relationship and you didn’t bother to even say me, your best friend! Wow!!! Awesome… This is your so called friendship… Tum badal gayeho Sanskar…
Sanskar turned her and once again they faced each other.
Sanskar – Accha, I have changed! Really!!! Tell me one thing Swara, from the past six months do you have time for me? Ha? We would meet only somedays that too in evenings if I visited!!! Tumhare paastime hai jaanne ke lea ki whatshappening in my life?
Swara looked into his eyes. He was deeply hurt and it was reflecting fully in his eyes!!! He left her suddenly and left. Swara was standing their numb… She waswrong, yes she did not give enough time to the relation which was most precious to her. She looked at the friendship bracelet which he had given her six years back. She had lost her best friend!!!
[An hour later]
“Just stop it Sanskar!!! I said just keep your mouth shut!!” – Swarascreamed..
Sanskar (pleading) – Plz Swara just listen to me once yaar… Plzz… What I said is true?
Swara – No I don’t believe you… Itsabsurd!!! No no ways…
Sanskar held her shoulders tightly and looked at her… She looked up.
Sanskar – Believe me Swara, its true!!! I have just seen…
Before he could complete a tight slap landed on his cheeks. Swaraslapped him… He was taken aback by her actions. Swara, his Swarawho was his life, for the sake of whose happiness he did everything, she slapped him!!! This was it!!! He left her and took backward steps and left the place.
Swara wanted to stop him but could not… Tears rolled down her cheeks. She fell down on the floor crying…
