ENIGMATIC LOVE – CHAPTER 1

The smell of the medicines filled my lungs as I opened my eyes slowly. My head ached like hell and I scanned my surroundings. It is a hospital. How did I forget? About some time ago, I gained my consciousness and I realised that I have been admitted to a hospital. What had happened to me? And who was that man sitting near me? That man seemed to be so happy that I gained consciousness and he held my hand and placed it against his heart and smiled at me. I was confused by his actions. And What did he call me, Ragini? Who’s ragini? I would have asked him, but before I could, I lost my consciousness. My trance was broken when the doctor entered the room along with a nurse who seemed to be panicky.

” So, Mrs. Ragini Singhania, how are u feeling now?” She asked me, making me shocked. ” Ragini? Why everyone is calling me ragini?” I said it in a go unable to withstand the confusion. “Listen to me calmly now. You had met with an accident and due to severe injuries on your head, you were in a critical position and you slipped into coma 2 days ago. Thankfully, you are now out of it. But, it had cost your memory. You have lost your memory. You are Mrs. Ragini Vidyut Singhania.” As the doctor said all these, I felt like my whole world crashing down.

I had lost my memory! I feel like I am a stranger in my own life. Wait! What did she say? Mrs. Ragini? Does it mean that I am married? Oh god! I looked at her blankly. The doctor continued, ” And one more thing, Mrs. Singhania. You are pregnant. It is a total miracle that your delicate child had survived this disaster. Because, you are just 2 months pregnant. So, take care of your health. Don’t stress yourself by thinking about your past. It might harm your baby. Take care.” She went from there. Pregnant?? Me? Gosh! My head started to spin as I could not understand the things happening in my life. I placed my hand on my abdomen. My eyes welled up with tears.

I have a husband and I am gonna become a mom! The door creaked open and I saw 4 members entering the room followed by the doctor. Among them was the man, who I saw a few hours ago. I looked at them. There was a middle aged lady, dressed in a sari; A girl about 20 years old clad in a jeans was standing next to her; Another girl dressed in a salwar, stood next to her. Then, this man. Everyone were looking worried. “Ragini, This is your mother-in-law, Mrs. Avantika Singhania.” Doctor said as she pointed towards the saree clad lady. I looked at her with null expression. She, in turn, smiled at me through her tears. Her heart warming smile made me smile back at her. Then, I came to know that those two girls were my sisters-in-law, Shanaya rathore and Saanvi chauhaan. I passed out a faint smile to them as they smiled at me. “And, This is Mr.Vidyut Singhania, your HUSBAND” She said pointing to that man. I looked at him. He was almost 6 feet tall, with a beard, toned body and little long hair. His eyes were red, seems that he had cried.

Though, I smiled at those 3, I could not smile at him. I didn’t know why. Now I know why he reacted like that, few hours back. As the doctor went from the room, he came to me and held my hand. He caressed my hand as I looked at him. “How are you feeling now?” His cracky voice did something to my heart. “Better” I replied politely. My mother-in-law and my sisters-in-law gave me a light hug and my mom-in-law kissed me on my forehead. I smiled at her. My heart warmed towards her and I don’t know the reason. “Ginu beta, don’t take too much stress. I know it’s hard to mingle with us immediately, but take your time. I won’t mind. I am so excited that I am gonna become a grandmom. Uff!” She is such a sweet person.

How could she understand me so well? I nodded smilingly. “Ginu?” I asked her. “Ha, I used to call you ginu.” She told me. “And I used to call you ragz” Shanaya said. ” And I used to call you ragu bhabhi” Saanvi chirped happily. I looked at them with a smile. Was my life before so beautiful? ” And bhai toh, he used to call you…. Mrs. VD” As Saanvi said these, everyone except him chuckled. I looked at her confused. “Why are u guys laughing?” I asked them. “Woh toh bhai khud kahenge!” She said and burst into laughter. I glanced at him, who looked embarrassed. ” I’ll go and get the medicines ” He said and went from the room hastily and the room was filled with laughter again. My lips curved into a smile at his actions.

“I am so happy right now. Thank you so much for this gift ginu!” Maa said over the phone. ” Maa! How many times will you say this?” I asked her. ” How many times ever I say this, I can’t get enough of this” She said. ” Ok, Ginu. It’s getting late. Take rest. I’ll call you tomorrow” She said as she ended the call. Vidyut was feeding me the dinner. It has been 5 days and I was told that I would be discharged soon. We didn’t talk much other than the formal talks. But I mingled with Maa, Shanaya and Saanvi and I felt so happy to be with them. I could not see him often, as he has his meetings, but every time, he manages to feed me with his hands and give me medicines without fail. I am amazed by his care for me. Lucky me. But, I am not able to accept this relation immediately after the sudden confrontation. I need time. I know that I am slowly opening up to him. It was better than the first day, where we both were engulfed in silence. “Thanks for understanding me Mr. Singhania.” I told him. He looked at me and nodded. He talks less. In fact, in these 5 days, I wondered whether he was my husband. He cares for me, but he didn’t talk to me like a husband talks to his wife. May be, he wants to give me some time. But he could have told me that. All this makes me perplexed. And I wanted to know how this accident happened. Every time, when I was about to ask him this, he would just go away as if he does not want to talk to me.  This question arose inside me for the past 4 days and today I will ask him. As he finished feeding me, he stood up and was about to go, when I held his hand. He stopped and turned towards me. “Actually, I wanted to ask you something.” I asked him, for which he nodded. Why he always does this nodding business? ” I wanted to know how my accident happened” ” It was an unfortunate car accident.” He said shortly. I understood that he didn’t like talking about that.

So, I thought to change the topic. ” How I used to be before?” I asked him cheerfully. Immediately, the shade of his face changed. “You were full of life. You are a chatter box. Not to forget that you are short tempered.  Your anger would break the whole world. But you look cute when you were angry.” He said lost. His eyes became moist. That last sentence of his made my heart flutter. “Uh?” I said raising my eyebrows. “Woh, actually… I meant..” He stammered. I chuckled. “It’s ok. By the way, you look cute now” I blurted. Now, it was my turn to become embarrassed. How did I blurt out like this? Gosh! “I meant….” I stammered and he laughed. This was the first time, I saw him laugh and he did look cute after all. I joined him. I laughed heartily and it felt good.

“Was our marriage arranged by our parents? How did we meet?” I asked him after a  while. His smile faded. “I think it’s late now and u should sleep. Good night.” He said as he caressed my hair and pulled over the quilt over me, forcing out a  short smile. Though, I am slowly adapting myself to the recent changes, there’s something that makes me feel strange. And now I know that there’s something about our marriage. I’ll find it out soon.
