Shivaay asks Annika to dance
CHAPTER 7
As Shivaay led Annika to the middle of the dance floor, She couldn’t help but notice everyone shooting her shocked looks. She could imagine their thoughts : Shivaay Singh Oberoi had actually appeared at an Elite event and was dancing with a nobody?
She turned to her side and saw her mother looking at her absolutely gobsmacked while her sister, who was standing with her beamed at Annika.
Annika (muttering softly) : Great, Even my own mother is surprised.
Shivaay : I’m sorry?
Annika shook her head as Shivaay took her in his arms and they began swaying to the music.
Shivaay : I’m pretty sure you told something.
Annika shrugged nonchalantly, hoping it would seem like a light hearted move.
Annika : Everyone is avidly looking at us, Mr Oberoi.
Shivaay : Because I’m attending an Elite event? I thought it essential to make appearances for Swara’s sake. Anyways, Why weren’t you dancing?
Annika considered his question for a moment before replying.
Annika : I did dance with Akshat and Om. As for the others, it’s been years since I did.
Shivaay (frowning) : But why?
Annika : The ones who did ask me were fortune hunters or they… they liked me only for my exterior if you know what I mean. It seemed easier to stop dancing as a whole.
Shivaay : And which category do I fall into, Miss Mishra?
Annika (flashing him an amused smile) : Neither one, I suppose. Although your reputation precedes you.
He raised one brow.
Shivaay : Oh?
Annika blushed, her cheeks a pretty pink. Who asked her to go and open her stupid mouth? And why couldn’t she be one of those girls who knew how to flirt and impress men?
Shivaay spoke, a teasing tilt to his voice.
Shivaay : Come on, Miss Mishra! Don’t tell me you’re backing off now. Let me hear about my so called nefarious reputation.
She met his eyes, noting the challenge there.
Annika (lightly) : Alright then. Is it true that you jumped from the first floor onto a rose bush in the middle of the night in your girlfriend’s house?

Shivaay looked at her shocked. But he soon recovered and amusement flashed in his eyes.
Shivaay : As a gentleman, I don’t think I should confirm or deny this allegation.
Annika (raising her eyebrows) : As a gentleman, Shouldn’t you definitely deny the occurrence?
Shivaay laughed, real pleasure in his tone. He smiled, a wicked grin, and Annika was thankful for the companionable silence that fell between them, for she was not certain she could find words in the face of his rare smile and laugh. She lost herself in the dance, in the sound of the music, in the sway of their bodies. If this was to be her only dance with him, she wanted to remember every moment. She closed her eyes, allowing Shivaay to guide her around the room, and Annika became keenly aware of his hand touching her waist, the brush of his legs against her own as they swirled across the floor. After several moments, she became disoriented and opened her eyes, uncertain whether the source of her disorientation was the movement or the man. Meeting Shivaay’s eyes, she accepted the truth.
It was, of course, the man.
Shivaay : Maybe we could talk about Swara?
Annika nodded, trying not to feel disappointed. She had met with Swara three more times since that first meeting but she had not seen Shivaay any of those times. Perhaps it was for the best, She did turn into a ninny when she saw him.
Shivaay, blissfully unaware of her thoughts nodded as well.
Shivaay : I know you invited her today but she wasn’t feeling upto attending an Elite event already. I must say I quite agree. When do you think she’ll be ready? Has she finished her training?
Annika : Swara is very bright. I don’t think she needs any “training” as you call it, Mr Oberoi. She does not need to be an Elite puppet.
Shivaay : I quite agree, Miss Mishra. She will nevertheless learn how to stay in Elite society.
Annika : But.. She does not want to stay here. Surely she told you that?
Shivaay’s lips pursed into a thin line.
Shivaay : You don’t think I should let her go to Italy?
Annika met his eyes and was shocked to see the anger in them.
Annika : Mr Oberoi…
Shivaay : Miss Mishra! I asked you to take care of her and I also told you that I wanted her to stay here. You know my motives and what I expect from you. Will I be disappointed, Miss Mishra?
Annika frowned.
Annika : I believe I gave you my word that day, Mr Oberoi. While you may not like to be questioned on your decisions, I too do not like my word being questioned. I have and will continue to do my best to make Swara learned about the Elite. I am her friend and would not want any unhappiness for her.
Shivaay looked at her so intently that she squirmed. Finally, he gave her a short nod.
Shivaay : I’m sorry.
Annika was so surprised she nearly stumbled, but he caught her. His hands were around her shoulders, binding her closer to him than she should have been.
Annika : Excuse me?
Shivaay’s eyes flashed a hint of amusement once more.
Shivaay : I said I’m sorry. Is that so surprising?
Annika quickly shook her head, mortified that she could be so rude.
Annika : Not at all.
Shivaay : Well then, I should make up for my rudeness. How may I do so?
The song had ended and the two walked across the room. Annika looked at him puzzled.
Shivaay : I doubted you. I think I should make some amends for that. What can I do?
Annika smiled and was just about to say nothing at all when it occurred to her. He might be able to help her with another item on her list.
Annika : I… I..
Shivaay : Come on. Do tell me.
Annika : I need the name of a pub.
Shivaay stopped in his tracks, startled.
Shivaay : Excuse me?
Annika : A pub, Mr Oberoi. A non Elite one.
Shivaay (frowning) : Why would you need to go to a pub?

Annika (trying to sound casual) : Who said it’s for me?
Shivaay : Then?
Annika : It’s for a friend. She’s trying to accomplish something. I just thought of taking this oppurtunity to ask you.
Annika tried to look innocent as he shot her a suspicious glance. She looked around so that she wouldn’t get flustered. It was then that she realised that they were in the adjoining corridor. Alone.
Shivaay seemed to have realised that as well. Annika brought her eyes back to meet his face. She was not expecting him to smile. And so, when he did—a wicked, wolfish grin that shook her to her toes—she was completely unprepared. A burst of heat spread through her, and her heart began to pound. She couldn’t stop staring at his white teeth, his wide, soft lips.
He was more handsome than he had ever been.
Shivaay took advantage of her unguarded state, closing in on her until her back was pressed against the wall. She noticed belatedly that the corridor was remarkably quiet, considering the mass of people in the next room.
He did not seem to care that the entire Elite was mere inches away.
She grew nervous.
He reached out and ran a finger down the length of her arm, leaving a trail of fire where he touched her. He brushed his thumb over the skin there, sending her pulse racing.
Annika’s entire world had been reduced to this single moment, this single caress. She could not tear her eyes from the point where they touched. The warmth of his hand, the even stroke of his thumb, consumed her as it threatened her sanity.
She did not know how long he stood caressing her before he lifted her hand to his lips and pressed his mouth to the bare skin of her wrist. Her eyes closed against the flood of sensation that came with the touch—the softness of his lips, parted just enough to breathe a hot, moist kiss upon her before he scraped his teeth against the sensitive spot.
She heard her own gasp and opened her eyes just in time to feel his tongue soothing the skin. He boldly met her gaze as he wreaked havoc on her senses, and she couldn’t help but watch him, knowing that he knew exactly what he was doing to her.
With one final kiss, Shivaay let go of her hand, holding her gaze as he leaned toward her. When he spoke, his words were more air than sound as they brushed softly over the skin of her temple.
Shivaay : Second right from Golden gate road. The Twin Sins.
With a last caress, Shivaay slowly withdrew from her and moved back slowly. Annika’s remain closed until she knew that he had gone back inside and then with a tremble, She opened them.
She had been confused at his final words. They seemed so unexpected. But then she understood. She took a few deep breaths to calm herself down and then walked back to the party where she found that Shivaay had left.
To tell the truth, She wasn’t completely surprised. Nor was she utterly crushed.
After all, He had helped her by giving the name of a pub.
