” Asha….. Asha……!! ” Bejoy called out loudly holding a piece of paper in his hand.
“What happened Bejoy…..?? Don’t call me again to say that Saurav’s bycycle has punctured for the (n+1)th time…..!! ” Asha replied back from kitchen..
” At least once in a while come out from your world of cooking Asha……!! See what I have got…..!! Come soon….!! ” Bejoy again called out loudly.
Asha came into sona’s room wiping her wet hands to a white Napkin. Bejoy quickly handed over the paper to Asha pointing to a particular line. Asha widened her eyes with a visible surprise on her face….
” Where did you get this….?? This is our Sona’s handwriting…..!! What is this….?? Let me read the whole thing…..!!” Asha exclaimed looking at Bejoy
Both of them were seriously discussing over the paper when Sona came back from college. She as usual dropped her bag on the sofa and hugged Bejoy. Surprisingly both of them turned to either direction refusing to look at her…..!!
” What happened Baba..!! Are you angry …..?? And what is this piece of paper…” Sona asked Bejoy taking the paper from his hands….!!
Sona’s eyes popped out looking at that colourful paper. She could not believe the fact that now Both Asha and Bejoy have come to know her secret…..!!
“. Where did you get this…?? This is not mine. I have not written it…!! ” Sona said in one breath..
” You must be knowing about it very well than us…!! How many such papers like this are with you…??” Asha questioned Sona.
” How many times have I said you not to read my PD ( personal Dairy ) Mom….!!??” Sona questioned back to asha.
” Shona beta…, its not from your personal dairy…!! Its the last page of your Maths Notes….!!” Bejoy replied to her.
” Baba…. It was written last year….!! There is nothing like this now…!! I even don’t know in which mood I have written it…!! It may be a fantasy…..!! ” Sona replied.
” Last Year Shona beta…..!! I have brought your Maths notes last week itself. Now say me who is HE….!!??Do you love him…??For whom is this ‘ Love Letter ‘ written ” Bejoy questioned back sona.
” All doors are closed sona…!! You have to say it out today…. C’mon Sona….You can do it….!!” She said to herself.
” Ba…ba……,, Baba….. HE is….!! HE is……!!” Sona grouped for her words…
” See….. See Bejoy….!! How your daughter is shying even to say his name….!! I think she know him from a LONG time…….!!” Asha added fuel to Bejoy’s anger…
” Chup kar Asha….!! Tell me Shona beta who is HE….!!??” Bejoy asked again.
” Baba….. He is my senior in college. His name is Dev Dixit. Baba…He is shortly known as ‘G3’ in college….!! GoodLooking… GoodLooking….and….GoodLooking….!!. But he likes me very much Baba…..!!” Sona said happily.
” Senior…..!! Which year…?? Which Branch…..?? Is he a Bengali…..?? How good is he in studies….?? ” questions came continuously from Bejoy.
” Baba……. He is 2nd year…… CS branch. He is topper and……” Before she could say anything she was cut short by Bejoy…!!
” We need to meet him Shona…!! I want to see that cunning guy who has trapped you….. Today is Saturday….,a half day…!! Tell him to come today night @ 8 PM for dinner to our home……” Bejoy ordered Sona and went away..!!
Sona running came to her room quickly picking up her phone and dialing Dev’s number….!!
Sona : ” Hello….. Dev… Dev….!!”
Dev : ” Hey honey….. Already missing me…..!!?? ”
Sona : ” Dev…..!!Dev…..!! You know what happened today…..??Baba and ma came to know about us….!! ”
Dev : ” How….?? I mean Why….?? When…..??”
Sona : ” Baba read my love letter written behind maths notes…… ”
Dev : ” Wow……!! Hey honey…!! You never said that you write love letter to me….!! ”
Sona : ” Dev….!! Listen to me clearly……. Baba wants to meet you….!! He has invited you to have dinner at 8:00 today …..!!”
Dev : ” Woooww…..!! This sounds soooo exciting sona….!! ”
Sona : ” You are ekdum impossible Dev…..!! Baba will take your interrogation session today and you are finding it exciting……!! ”
Dev : ” let’s hope for best sonuu…!! I’ll be there today…..!! ”
Sona : ” okay…..!! All the best Dev….!! Don’t be nervous and answer honestly to Baba’s questions….!!”
Dev : ” you sound more nervous than me baby……!! Bye….!! Don’t worry….”
Sona : ” Okay…..Bye…..!!”
Sona was impatiently pacing from this corner to the other impatiently in her study room……!! “It is more difficult than the last 5 minute study before giving a math test ” Sona said for herself…
She took out a pink T- top and light blue repead jeans with a jeans coat. All sorts of questions from the depth of her mind kept on popping now and then. She just wished that her Baba should like Dev…….!!
Sona came down to hall and saw Bejoy was wearing a white T-shirt with dhoti in Bengali style. Asha wore a kanchivaram saree and sourav was dressed up in his casuals….. It seemed that Dev will be interrogated like Helllll……!! Sona taught to herself swallowing a lump of fear in her throat…..!!
On the other side…., as the clock ticked 6:00 Dev started to go impatient. He even googled on ‘ Tips To Impress Your futur IN-LAWS ‘…… He had totally messed up his cupboard in selecting a dress for himself. He found the idea of wearing a formal shirt with a tie very corny… So he dressed up himself in a T- shirt and repead jeans.. He applied. ‘AXE’ perfume and set his hair ensuring for the 100th time that he looked correct….!!
It seemed Bejoy was preparing a question at the tick of every sec. There was an absolute silence which only added fear to Sona’s nervousness. She has finished a entire jug of water kept on the table to please her dry lips every now and then. Finally there was a loud car sound outside the house and Sona got up to open the door…..!!
3 arrows of death stares were thrown at Dev who stood at Sona’s house doorstep holding a bouquet of fresh red roses….. Bejoy Scanned him from Top to Bottom

Dev forwarded his hands to give the bouquet and seeing Bejoy in no mood to receive it Sona took it from his hands and gave a welcoming smile….
All of them moved towards the living room with Dev seated in face to face in front of Bejoy and Asha. Sona was sitting on the adjacent sofa beside Dev….
Bejoy : ” Soo…… How are you feeling….!!”
Dev : ” Exciting uncle…..!!”
Bejoy : ” What…..!! You’re not nervous, scared, but you are excited….!!”
Dev : ” Actually….I mean…..!!”
Asha : ” We very well know what you mean….!!”
Bejoy : ” What is your name…?? From which branch are you..?? What are your grades…?? ”
Dev : ” Uncle, myself Dev….. and…. I’m from CS department, 2nd year….. I have 9.7 grade points…. And…..!!”
Bejoy : ” Haan…. What do you think….?? If your name is Dev… Our daughter is Paro….!! Life is not a Bengali novel…. Got it…..!! She is not Paro…… She is my daughter Shona……”
Dev : ” Umm…… Yes uncle….. For me also she is Sona only…..!!”
Bejoy : ” What….!! You call her by short names….!! Even sourav won’t call her like that…. Tell me what else name will you call my Shona beta….. ”
Dev : ” Uncle…. I call her Honey, Baby, Sonu , Buttercup, beautiful , sweetuu ,……”
Bejoy : ” Stop it…!! Do you know Bengali…..?? ”
Dev : ” No uncle….; we speak pungabi…..!! But I’ll try to learn…..!! ”
Bejoy : ” what do you mean by I’ll try to Learn….!!Are you a Punjabi
…!! Are you a Non- vegetation..?? ”
Dev : ” Yes uncle….; I like Chicken, biriyani, fish, pork, egg, crab, prons ,..and…….!! ”
Asha : ” So you have entire ocean world in your stomach only…!! But our sona is pure veg…..!!”
Dev : ” Yes aunty…. I know…;”
Bejoy : ” See him Shona beta… He knows you’re a vegetarian but he still eats non-veg. Such boys force their decision on you beta….!!”
Sona : ” No baba… Dev is not like that…..!!”
Asha : ” Sona have you also tasted non-veg with him….??”
Sona : ” No….. Mom…!!”
Bejoy : “So….Say about your hobbies… Other than eating the entire sea world….!!”
Dev : ” Playing basketball , cricket.., Boxing..,….!!”
Bejoy : What…..Boxing…?? Are you scaring me if I won’t agree you are going to punch me….?? But I won’t care….!!”
Dev : ” I didn’t mean that….!!”
Asha : ” We know what you mean….!! ”
Dev : ” Aunty……!! I…..!!”
Bejoy : ” Are you in Facebook , Instant – gram….??”
Dev : ” Yes uncle…, Everyday we both chat in Facebook messenger itself and I’m not in instant-gram but I’m in instagram….!!”
Bejoy : ” Shona…..!! You are in Facebook….!! This guy has totally spoilt you….!!”
Dev : ” No…. No….uncle…!!”
Sona : ” No… Baba….!!”
Bejoy : ” What is your aim….?? ”
Dev : ” To become a Basketball player…. And marry your daughter……!! ”
Bejoy : ” What…..!! ”
Asha : ” What……!!”
Sona : ” Baba…. Baba…. He is a national level football player….!!”
Bejoy : ” Shona beta…. You think playing basketball will fill both of your stomach…..?? ”
Dev : ” Uncle….. But I’m really good at it….!!”
Bejoy : ” How many girl friends you have….?? ”
Dev : ” Many uncle….!!”
Bejoy : ” What….!!Many girlfriends…..!! Did you give a bye bye hand for all of them..?? For how many days will you change your GF’s…??
Dev: ” Uncle , GF’s means all my class girls who are my good friends…. !! Sona is my love…..r…!!”
Bejoy : ” Shona beta….!! Listen to me…!! This guy is not at all save for you….!! This Facebook people are like this only beta….!! See the way he is saying he has many GF’s ”
Sona : ” Baba…… His Girlfriends are even my friends also baba….!! They all are really nice…..!!”
Bejoy : ” You are blindly believing this boy Shona….. I warn you….!”
Asha : ” What do your parents do ?? Do they know about your girlfriends….??”
Dev : ” Aunty My father is no more and my mom….. Works as a teacher…. and…..”
Asha : ” ohh…. I’m sorry….!!”
Bejoy : ” Shona beta…… Don’t melt to his stories…!! ”
Sona : ” Baba….. Please baba….!!”
Bejoy : ” Are there any legal cases on you…?? Hit and run…?? Stealing…!! Killing…..!!”
Sona : ” Baba…. What are you asking….. Does he look like that..?? ”
Bejoy : ” You stay out of it Shona beta…..!! I don’t want to marry my daughter to a Victim in the eyes of law…… !!”
Dev : ” No…… No uncle….!! I don’t have any such cases….!!”
Bejoy : “Do you drink and smoke….?? Don’t hesitate say me….!!”
Dev : ” No uncle…. Players are not allowed to do that…. So….”
Bejoy : ” You mean….. Once you stop playing you want to Smoke and drink……??!!!”
Dev : ” No….. No…..uncle…I didnt mean that….!!”
Asha : ” How many siblings do you have..?? Are they married…?? Do they have children…?? How many….??”
Dev : ” Aunty…I have 3 sisters and one is married….”
Asha : ” 3 sisters…..!! Sona…. It will be difficult for you dear….!! How many children is she having…??”
Dev : ” She is not having any children as……”
Asha : ” Why….!! Why is she not having children….??”
Dev : ” Coz they have married last month itself…..
Asha : ” Ohh…. I see…..!! ”
Bejoy : ” Why are you wearing torn jeans….?? and this loose T-shirt….??!!”
Sona : ” Baba…. It is fashion now….. It is repead jeans….!!”
Dev : ” I know…..I know…… What is fashion…..!! ”
Asha : ” Do you want something….??”
Dev : ” Yes Aunty……… Your daughter…..!!”
Asha : ” I mean…. Would you like to have anything to eat or drink….??”
Dev : ” ohh….. Sorry…. Its okay aunty…. Just a glass of water….!!”
Asha : ” Sona…. Go and get orange juice for him…”
Sona : ” haan maa….”
Sona whispered that he messed up things in dev’ s ears…… After all this formalities Dev started his bike to go and bid a bye to all of them.
Back in Bose house there was a silence which finally Bejoy broke up saying ” I didn’t like that guy beta…. You still deserve a better person…”. Even Asha nodded her head joining the opinion of Bejoy.
Sona has no option left and felt very sad and heart broken. She ran from the living hall to her room and shut it hard. She started crying like a small kid feeling low that all wrong things happens only with her…..
Asha and Bejoy were still in the hall when they heard a mobile beep. It was sona’s cell phone with Dev’s number popping on the screen. Bejoy lifted the call and before he could speak Dev; started speaking from the other side……
” Im sorry sona…..; I know you are crying right now…. And you were right…. I messed up everything. I actually didn’t wanted to give your parents a false hope about our relationship. I want them to like me the way I am . I know you are thinking that your parents words hurt me….. But no sona….!! Actually you are very lucky….. Today more than the questions I faced I saw a concern and love in their voice for you dear…. You are indeed lucky to have them… I too wish I had a possessive father like you have Bejoy uncle. My sisters even don’t know what will be a father’s love. If you loose me you will find another guy but…. If you loose your parents trust…. It won’t come back to you easily. It was our first attempt sona…. I’ll try better next time…. Don’t loose your heart and hopes honey…….. Sona…… Sona….. Are you listening……?? Stop crying sona……!!”
Bejoy and Asha were still in shock about what they heard. Before Asha would speak they again heard Dev saying…..
” I know your anger is justified that I lied to your parents my name is Dev and not Dev Dixit…. But I didn’t wanted them to agree just because Dixit is attached to my name…. I now I handle a part of the Dixit family business but my real aim is to become a basketball player…. Give me one more chance honey and I’ll set all things right…. I will try to impress your parents and wait until your parents agree to our relationship. Sona….. Sona…… Please say something…… Are you listening……??!! So….”
The call was terminated abruptly by Bejoy and Asha. Both of them were shocked that he wa a kid of Dixit family – The most reputed family for culture in Calcutta and a big name in the buiseness world. They were just blown away by his down to earth nature….!! They were really impressed now by his honest answer and his spirit to not give up on Sona….!! Asha scolded Bejoy for scaring the poor guy away….!! They looked up at Sona’s room but it was still locked.
The next day morning Sona was totally upset and sat by her room window looking at the children cheerfully playing Holi…. There was colours everywhere and loud screams of happiness….. ” I just wish Dev was here…..!!” Sona thought to herself gloomily. She came out of her dream world when she heard a knock on her room door…!! She opened it to find Bejoy and Asha standing there with Aloo paratha and milk. She was about to close the door again when Asha said ” We want to meet Dev again….; Today….!!” Sona was taken aback by surprise….!! And wondered was it their new plan to insult Dev….!!
” Baba…. Ma….;Do you still want to Bash my boyfriend….??” Sona asked them dropping herself into arm chair….
Bejoy and Asha narrated the whole incident which led to their change of opinion on Dev.
” We always want the Best to come in your way Shona beta….; I reacted that way as it came as a shock for all of us but I didn’t realize that My Shona can make no mistakes….” Bejoy said with a frown on his face….!!
” We were a bit hard on you last night but we have a surprise for you dear…..” Asha said opeani g her arms towards sona for a friendly hug.
” Shotti…..!! Shotti…. Mere liye surprise hai….!!” Sona eyes beamed with excitement…!!
She saw someone standing at the door and she could not belive her eyes…. It was Dev who was standing there with his arms open just like SRK in ‘ DDLJ ‘ movie……. She ran and hugged him wishpering ” I Love You Dev….” .
He took out colours from his pocket and Splashed it happily on her completely coloring the white kurta which she wore….. There was a bright smile in both of their face….
