The night is dark and hushed. If you listen carefully, you can hear laboured breathing and the sound of mud being shovelled. About thirty feet under the ground, four men in Army fatigues are working hard by the light of lamp fitted on their helmets.
Three of them stand by, waiting for shovels full of wet mud to be thrown back at them. They are packing the mud into a bucket hanging from a rope, and then giving the rope a tug to alert people at ground level to pull it out. Brigadier Vansh Rai Singhania of the independent Parachute Field Company, part of the Army’s Corps of Engineers, is inside a dark tunnel four feet in diameter.
If he wants to stand up, he can’t. Fighting the muscle ache that has set in from being on his haunches for hours, Vansh used the shovel to dig more deep. All of a sudden, Riddhima’s cry pierce the silence. He stiffens for a moment and then grits his teeth and starts shovelling mud frantically.
It has been nearly 24-hours since Riddhima has been trapped. He has to save her – come what may!
