Crumbling world

‘Tell me what?’ Naira asked.
‘You have always been a really good friend to me , Naira. In fact, the Best Friend I’ve ever hard. I’ve always thought of you as a very strong girl, way more nature than your age. Your attitude, the way you don’t Care about what people think were things I always admired about you. But….’ he stopped.
‘But what?’ she asked.
She was amused in the beginning thinking this was another prank of his . He was a born prankster. pranks ranging from transferring all the currency From her Phone into his and prank calling her as strangers supposedly in love with her, he had done it all.
Karthik had never been so hesitant to Talk. He always managed to exude confidence, even when he was sad. Yet today, he wasn’t able to articulate the deepest and purest emotion he’d ever Felt in his life.
‘But what Karthik?’ Naira asked shaking him out of his melancholy.
‘But I saw a whole other side of you these last couple of days. The side where you care. You care a lot for your family, your friends, enough that you would happily give up your life for them. And that’s true beauty, you know. You’re different. You think you don’t match up to the society’s standards of beauty. I’ve seen your inferiority complex. But what you have is a beautiful soul. And I can’t tell you how grateful I am that you’re in my life.

‘But yesterday when you broke down like that, when I saw you lying on that hospital bed, I began to realise the extent of my emotions.’ Karthik said.
Naira’s mouth was now hanging open. Emotions? What emotions?

‘When I felt the rage that I did when that Kishen walked in..’
‘ you punched him, didn’t you? Naira asked.

‘ of course, I did. That guy had it coming.’

Naira was now scared about where this was going.

‘But in a way, I’m grateful to him for making me realise.
Make me realise that I’m in love with you. I love you Naira.’

Naira was taken aback.
‘ Karthik if this is another one of your pranks I’m gonna bang your guitar on your head.’

‘Look me in the eye. Does it look like I’m playing a prank?’
Karthik asked, slightly offended That she thought his love was a joke.

‘But why me? I’m nothing. A nobody. There’s nothing in me that’s Worth falling for’

There it was. Her inferiority complex.

‘if I weren’t in love with you, I’d have slapped you Right now. What do you mean there’s nothing Worth falling for? You’re smart, cute, I’ve always told you , you are. And above all you have a beautiful heart, something that most people lack these days. And about who you are, you’re everything to me. You’re my world. I hadn’t realised until yesterday But my world has always revolved around you. Every morning I Wake up and devise pranks to play on you, names to call you, ways to tease you. A day hasn’t gone by when I haven’t spoken to you or worried about you. And yesterday, it was the most horrible day of my life. To see you like that, struggling to breathe, was really hard for me. And when you said cardiologist this morning, I was so scared. I don’t know what I’ll do if something were to happen to you.’ Karthik said.
Naira was now hyperventilating.
Karthik held her by the shoulder, looked into her eyes and said ‘ look Naira, now I’m in Love with you. I don’t expect an answer From you because I know what your priorities are, you want to make it a as a great doctor. I Just wanted to let you know that I love you. Very much.’ Karthik said. There. He had presented his heart to her on a platter. It was her decision as to what she’d do with it. Crush it or humor it. But no matter what her answer would be, he’d still be by her side. Because she needed him, he was her best friend. And anyway, he was too weak to stay away From her.

Naira’s heart had now begun to race.
‘ no no no no. No. Please tell me this is a prank.’
When Karthik was just looking at her with eyes wide open, she began to sob. Karthik’s grip on her tightened. He hugged her.
‘ hey, why are you crying what happened?’
‘ I can’t lose , Karthik.’
‘ who said your losing me?’ Karthik asked.

‘I’m so sorry Karthik. I don’t feel that way about you. I have never thought of you in that way. I haven’t ever thought of anybody That way. My primary focus is to study. And expecting you to stay, is so wrong.’ she was now bawling.

Karthik felt his heart shatter into a million pieces. He had expected this to happen, and yet it stung. Stung like a thousand bees biting him all at once. All his dreams, were now destroyed.

Naira kept sobbing and Karthik just held her unable to say a word. It was all over. Would he still be able to stay?

‘ say something Karthik. Please. ‘ she was now struggling to breathe.
That brought Karthik back From his melancholy. nothing was worth more than her health. She was sick Right now and she needed him.

‘ I understand. Take your time. I’ll always be waiting.’ he said. Deep down he knew that this would be the hardest thing he’d ever do in his life, but he also had an intuition That she would somehow realise that She was never going to find anybody who’d Love her as much as he did. And he’d wait until then.
