Scene 1
Radha tells Baji that you have to control yourself, we can’t bring a Mughal woman into this palace. Chimaji says to think about your respect. Baji says love is above religion. I fought with the Mughals but not with religion. I know I am a Brahmin Hindu but when I was in a war, I used to do deals with Muslims and even ate with them. You people never questioned me then? Why because I was at war but now I am asking for my love so it’s wrong? I have slept and eaten in many houses from other religions but do you people have a problem with Mastani when she fought with me in the war and even saved my life? Radha says we have some rules in this house. Baji says Kashi promised me. Kashi says it’s not about me, it’s about our people and they will never agree.
In the village, people start gossiping about Mastani being a Mughal and having an affair with Baji. They all go to Guruji. He says this is a great sin, we have to talk to Kashibai. They all start going to the palace.
Baji tells the family that he is not wrong so he will do what he thinks is right. Radha says then you can stay with that other woman here and we will all leave. She says Kashi is your wife and that woman is another woman. Radha says I will never stay with that girl under the same roof. Chimaji says you can stay here, we will all leave. His family leaves. Mastani is sitting in a daze. Matank says don’t worry about Kashi’s words, just trust your Baji. Mastani says I didn’t feel bad about Kashi’s words. Baji says we are known by our father’s religion. Radha says that girl’s mother is a Muslim and she had an illegitimate relationship after which Mastani was born so I will never accept her. Kashi says her father accepted her in his religion so it doesn’t matter. Guruji says we have pure Hindu blood but that girl doesn’t have it. Radha says we accepted that girl but we can’t accept her being a Muslim. Kashi is our Lakshmi so I can’t accept a Muslim girl against her in this palace. Baji says Mastani deserves to be in this palace. If Kashi is Lakshmi here then she will decide, he asks Kashi to take a decision. Radha asks her to say no. Guruji tells Kashi that if you accept that girl then others will be encouraged to marry Muslims too. Kashi feels pressure and looks at Baji.
